An Initial Study on the Optical Fiber Sensor for Continuous Monitoring and Control of Cell Mass
초록
영어
The randomly mixed type optical fiber sensor and the centralized type one were developed for the on-line, continuous, real time measurement and control of cell mass, which is one of the most important parameters in thebiochemical process. The whole system together with electronic measuring system were tested in the various strains andsolutions for the determination of the linearity of optical density OD and cell mass, and the stability. Also, the stabilityand linearity of the centralized sensor was better than those of the randomly mixed type sensor in the solutions of analogof culture medium such as rice wine, milk and yoghurt. But, the stability and the intensity were severely affected bythe contact part geometry of quartz window and fiber, the evenness of the window surface and the angle of thetransmittance and back scattering at the window. The measuring system was designed for the 4-20 mA output similarto that of commercially available Aquasant type of Mettler-Toledo. It can be concluded that the presently developedoptical sensor system can be extended its application to the biochemical process as long as its corresponding softwarefor individual strains are developed in advance.
