The purpose of this article is to reveal a problematic of integration and recognition of identity from anotherguess who assumes that it is superior (the United States from the text) against the Other (the textual Mexico) and tries to impose his values. This analysis tries to show some variants about this conflict of identity and recognition inside the novel Ciudades desiertas written by the Mexican José Agustín and reveal how they are structured in the text under the opposition Civilized vs. Barbarous. In such a way, we will observe how the text’s structures represent the social’s structures with its contradictions, its congruencies, in relation with the textual and extratextual situation of the novelized Mexico.
