The purpose of this research is to investigate understandings of China and Chinese of university students in Korea and to explicit the basis of experiences and information, which led to formation of those recognitions. Moreover, this research aims to discuss types of interests that they have about china and to explore possible topics that universities can discuss in their liberal arts courses. As a result, university students in Korea do recognize China as one of the most powerful countries in the future, however they seem to have negative images about the Chinese. There are several reasons for such an outcome, however, internet and media turn out to be the most influencial primary factors. Liberal arts courses in university desire to explore topics that can help students to understand current China, such as current Chinese economics, relations between Korea and China, Chinese geography and travel, and also popular cultures and issues in China.

본 연구는 한국 대학생들이 중국 및 중국인에 대해 어떠한 인식을 가지고 있는지 조사하고, 그러한 인식이 어떠한 정보 및 경험에 의해 형성된 것인지를 밝히고자 하였다. 또 한국 대학생들이 중국을 이해하기 위해 필요한 주제로 선택하는 관심분야는 어떤 것이며, 대학 내 교양과목에서 어떠한 주제를 다룰 수 있을 것인지를 고찰하고자 하였다. 조사 결과 한국 대학생의 중국에 대한 이미지는 발전 가능성이 큰 미래의 강대국이었지만 중국인에 대한 이미지는 대체적으로 부정적이었다. 그러한 이미지를 형성하게 된 요인은 다양하며 그 중에서 인터넷과 대중매체의 영향이 가장 큰 것으로 나타났다. 대학 내 중국관련 교양과목에서 다루기를 희망하는 주제로는 현대 중국을 이해할 수 있는 중국의 경제, 한중관계와 중국의 지역․여행, 중국의 대중문화 등을 선택하였다.
