What supports nationalism in global societies in the 21st century? The purpose of this paper is to examine the change in the values and the historical recognition of ordinary Korean and Japanese citizens by examining the effect of television historical dramas on historical recognition and by conducting a comparative analysis of the historical narrative of the two counties and distinctive feature of the times and materials of historical dramas. The Taigadrama of NHK is one of the genre of dramas describing the country and narrating the history. The drama therefore acts as an ideology that unifies the people and rebuilds the present country by recreating memories of her history. On the other hand, Korean historical dramas are not composed of genre, as revealed through an examination of all historical dramas of the private broadcast system. The characteristic of most Korean dramas is didactic or moralistic, more than ideological. For example, if Korean historical dramas and their historical recognition do not feature any nationalism, they will have no value as a mass culture. However, in the phenomena supporting the production of Koguryo historical dramas, neighboring countries are likely to become cautious of any expression of Korean nationalism.

본 연구는 한국과 일본의 역사드라마의 실태를 파악함으로써 일본인과 한국인의 대중적 가치관과 역사인식이 어떻게 변화되어 왔는가를 비교분석하고자 하는 것이다. 대중문화에 의한 역사인식 즉 TV역사드라마는 어떠한 역사소재에 의하여 어떠한 영향을 미치는가. 역사드라마의 시기별 소재별 특징, 역사드라마와 역사인식과의 관계, 그리고 내셔널리즘의 한일비교에 대한 고찰이다. 일본의 NHK대하드라마는 하나의 장르를 형성했고 일본의 대하드라마는 항상 국가를 묘사하고 국가의 역사를 이야기하는 것으로 장르성이 자리하고 있다. 과거의 일본국가의 기억을 통하여 현재의 국민국가를 장려하고 통합한다고 하는 이데올로기가 작동하고 있는 것이다. 반면 한국의 역사드라마는 일본과 달리 장르성이 없다는 것이다. 장르성이 없다는 것은 한국의 역사드라마가 역사에 대한 반성과 도덕적 가치에 더 비중을 두고 있으며 이데올로기로써 작동하지 않는다는 의미이다. 한국의 역사인식과 역사드라마가 한국적 내셔널리즘을 전혀 갖지 않는다면 오히려 국적이 없는 무의미한 것일 수도 있다. 그러나 고구려사 제작에서 엿볼 수 있는 것처럼 한국의 내셔널리즘을 한꺼번에 표출하여 인접국에서 그 위험성을 경계하는 분위기를 만들지 않도록 해야 할 것이다.
