Toxicity of Ionic Liquids on Mammalian Cell Lines

초록

영어

Ionic Liquids(ILs) are organic salts composed of cation and anion. Because of their negligible vapour pressure and properties, such as high chemo and thermostability, Ionic Liquids are called "Green Solvent"[1]. However, the principles of 'Green Chemistry' also include that green solvents should possess only little or no toxicity to living organisms and the environment[2]. The
toxicity of the some most commonly used Ionic Liquids ([Emim][Br], [Bmim][Br], [Bmim][Cl], [Hmim][Br], [Hmim][Cl], [Omim][Br], [Omim][Cl]) and some selected organic solvents (NaCl, DMSO, Acetone, Acetonitrile, Methanol, Ethanol) on human tumor cell lines (HeLa, SNU 354). The inhibition of cells growth in the presence of various ILs concentration was measured using Effective concentration(EC50) of toxicity in these test of each ILs was calculated.
Profound effect of cation in ILs was observed, but the effect of anion was little. Our results show that ILs can have some inhibitory effect on mammalian cells, which should be taken into account for environmental reasons as well as for the use of ILs as co-solvents in biotransformations.
