Many extraction methods by organic solvents, incorporating breakdown processes of cyst cells such as cryogenic grinding, acid or base treatment, enzyme lysis, mechanical disruption, and spray drying, have been developed for the separation of astaxanthin from red cyst Haematococcus cells.1-3) However, these previous methods have high energy consumption and multiple separation steps. Moreover, although the major applications of Haematococcus astaxanthin are additives of food and feed, the used solvents for astaxanthin extraction are petroleum-originated solvents. In this study, to overcome these problems and to develop an alternative downstream process of Haematococcus astaxanthin with a high feasibility, we proposed a simple, green extraction process using common vegetable oils such as soybean oil, corn oil, grapeseed oil, and olive oil, which yielded recovery yields of over 87.5%.
