In this research, hydrogen gas was produced from wastewater sludge in anaerobic condition, using marine algae as carbon source. Various marine macro-algae of enteromorpha, chlorella, Porphyra tenera, Undaria pinnatifida and laminaria were studied in the fermentation process. The optimal condition for hydrogen fermentation process were demonstrated to be at 35℃ for 144 hr. At this culture condition, the highest hydrogen yield was achieved as 103 ml/L when laminaria was used as carbon source. In addition, favorable hydrogen productivity of 42 ml/L, 26 ml/L, 36 ml/L and 51 ml/L were obtained with enteromorpha, chlorella, Porphyra tenera and undaria pinnatifida used in culture medium. Furthermore, the effect of pretreatment of laminaria for hydrogen production was investigated, which was the best carbon source used in this study. The Pretreatment includes grinding, heating, ultrasonication, acid and alkali treatments. After pretreatments, organic matters of various marine macro-algae were solubilized and soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) of grinded and acid (0.32N HCL) treated laminaria showed the maximum value.
