Acetone-Ethanol-Butanol (ABE) production was conducted in a continuous reactor of 2 L medium volume using suspended and immobilized Clostridium acetobutylicum ATCC 824. Butyric acid was fed as a co-substrate to increase butanol production and glucose was used as a carbon source. The dilution rate was set to 0.04 h-1. In suspended cell culture for ABE production, the average butanol concentration was 5.4 g/L, the maximum butanol concentration was 7.1 g/L and the yield was 0.2 g butanol/ g glucose at 289 h after operation. To increase of butanol production and yield, cells were immobilized using porous polymeric media. Compared to the suspended cell fermentation, butanol productivity and yield were enhanced by cell immobilization. In an immobilized continuous reactor, the average butanol concentration was 9.2 g/L, the maximum butanol concentration was 13.4 g/L and the yield was 0.5 g butanol/ g glucose at 154 h after continuous operation. The butanol concentration in the immobilized
reactor increased with approximately 2 times higher compared to the suspended cell fermentation.
