A study on Costume Designs for the Musical,Winter's Tale

This study has closely followed the performance of『Winter’s Tale』staged by Dongkook University celebrating its 100th anniversary, which put on stage from November 11th to 15th in 2006. The goal is to develop stage costume in a modern concept by participating from the planning to making process of stage costumes.I have surveyed internet web sites, and studied books and thesis at home and abroad to find the theological background of musicals and stage costumes. Based on this research, I have set the direction of the costume design of musical『Winter’s Tale』The total of 14 costumes were made based on the characters’ social status, personalities and natures, while reflecting musical’s production and costume goals. At the same time, the costumes were designed to show each different characteristic of actors at each scene. This thesis has developed musical costume design in modern concept in line with the producer's goal and also in coordination with the stage, lighting and music to epitomize the more creative stage costume. While reflecting the personality of the characters, the thesis has proposed the design that moulds the character. Also, the actions of the actors were taken into account that the flexible cloth which does not easily rumple were used. The time group including charismatic narrator, friendly cuckoo clock, strong and powerful electronic cloth, cute little desk watch, and sturdy wall clock were designed to have their own distinct image to contribute to the musical’s atmosphere. The actors leading the storyline including the kings, queens, princes, and princesses along with high ranking officials, generals, merchants were divided into their social status. The roles and social status of the characters were expressed by the color and the material of the cloth.
