한국의 전통선박은 조선공학자인 김재근金在瑾에 의해 집대성되었다고 볼 수 있는데, 한선韓船이라통칭되며 두껍고 평탄한 저판底板을 밑에 깔고 외판外板을 붙이고 가룡목駕龍木을 설치한 구조로 알려져있다. 김재근은 역사 사료의 한선에 대한 내용 정리와 더불어 조선공학적 해석을 덧붙여 정리하였으며, 특히 그의 저서 『한국의 배』는 한국선박사의 기본서로 지금까지 읽혀지고 있다. 그의 저서에따르면 한선은 저판에는 장삭長槊, 외판등에는 피삭皮槊이라고 불리는 목정木釘으로 고정하였다. 하지만 조선후기 영조시대 이후로는 전적으로 철정鐵釘만을 써서 건조하는 군선軍船, 또는철정과 목정을 혼용混用하는 배들도 있었다고 한다. 이처럼 한선에서 목정만 사용한 것은 아니었으나, 지금까지 한선의 철정사용에 대한 검토는 적극적으로 이루어진 적이 없다. 또한 일부 발굴된 선박에서도 철정의 흔적이 확인되고 있다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 철정의 흔적이 발견된 발굴선박의 사례를 살펴보고, 조선시대의 사료를 통해한국 전통선박에 철정이 어떻게 도입되며 사용되었는지를 살펴보았다. 발굴선박 중 통일신라시대‘안압지선’과 조선시대 ‘마도4호선’ 두 척에서 철정을 사용한 흔적을 확인할 수 있었으나, 발굴사례가 적어 같은 시기에 일반적으로 적용되었다고 확인하기에는 한계가 있다. 조선시대 사료에서 선박의 철정 사용이 처음 확인된 것은 세종3년(1421)년이며, 세종대에 전국적으로 도입을 시도하였으나, 문종대에 다시 원래의 제작방법으로 돌아간다. 하지만 이후에도 지속적으로 일부 군선에는 철정이 사용되었던 것으로 보여지는 사례를 확인할 수 있다. 군선에 철정이일반적으로 사용된 것은 정조대로 보여지며, 경상도에서 시작되어 전라도로 적용된 것을 확인할 수있다. 또한 순조대에는 사견선에도 철정이 사용되었음을 확인할 수 있었다.

Korea traditional ships are called "Hanseon". Hanseon is a type of flatboat. And most of them are known to have used wooden nails. Although Hanseon were built not only with wooden nails. But until now, there has never been an active review of the use of iron nails. In addition, traces of iron nails have been identified two of excavated ships. Therefore, this study looks at cases of excavated ships in which traces of iron nails have been found, and at how iron nails were introduced and used in Korean ships through the historical records of the Joseon dynasty. Among the many excavated shipwrecks, traces of the use of iron nails have been found in two ships, namely, the "Anapji Shipwreck" which dates from the Unified Silla dynasty and "Mado Shipwreck No. 4 which dates from the Joseon dynasty. However, such cases are rare, making it difficult to identify what they were at the time. It was in the third year of the reign of King Sejong (1421) that the use of iron nails in shipbuilding was first confirmed in the historical records of the Joseon dynasty. And although an attempt was made to introduce them nationwide in the reign of King Sejong, but it failed.However, it is possible to confirm that iron nails were used in some naval ships. After all, it can be seen that iron nails were commonly used in the construction of naval vessels in the reign of Jeongjo, and that it started in Gyeongsang-do and spread to Jeolla-do. In addition, it has been confirmed that iron nails were also used inJoseon’s Tongsinsa ships during the reign of King Sunjo.
