본 논문의 목적은 그리스도교 육화(Incarnation)론에 담긴 신체의 의미를 성 막시무스의 육화론을 통해 재발견하고, 이를 실존적 관점에서 논할 수 있도록 메를로-퐁티의 신체 지각론을 통해 그 구체성을 탐구하는 데 있다. 육화는 신성과 인성, 정신과 몸, 감각과 지성의 대립적 관계를 전제로 하지만, 그리스도교 육화 교리는 예수 그리스도 안에서 이 대비가 어떻게 연합하고 공존하는지를 논증해 왔다. 그리스도의 몸에서 인성과 신성이 연합하는 것과 피조 세계가 예수 그리스도 안에서 몸으로 연합하는 것이 육화의 궁극적 목적이기 때문이다. 육화에 관한 기존의 연구들은 주로 정신적, 상징적 의미나 교리적 중요성에 초점을 두었다. 이는 육화의 물리적, 구체적 측면에 대한 탐구가 상대적으로 부족했음을 의미한다. 이에 본 논문은 육화를 신체와 신체성에 집중하는 신체 지각론을 통해 설명함으로써 기존 논의의 부족한 점을 보완하고자 한다. 신체 지각론은 신체가 세상을 어떻게 경험하고 이해하는지를 탐구하는 이론적 틀로써 육화를 새로운 방식으로 조명하도록 돕는다. 이러한 노력은 신체를 매개로 육화 개념의 실존적 의미를 찾으려는 시도로써, 세계 내 존재가 신체적 차원에서 어떻게 실현되는지를 밝히는 일이다. 또한, 이것은 막시무스의 육화론에서 신체가 신성과 인성 그리고 감각적 세계와 지성적 세계를 통합하는 중요한 매개체로서 작용하는 것에 관한 현상학적 해설이라고 말할 수 있다. 이로 인해 육화가 신의 초월적 행위일 뿐만 아니라, 신체와 신체성을 통한 세계 내 실존적 경험이라는 것을 새롭게 제시한다. 결론적으로, 본 연구는 육화의 신체적, 실존적 차원을 재해석하여 그리스도교 신학의 현대적 재해석에 기여하고자 한다. 이것은 육화의 신체성을 통해 종교적 가치가 물질세계와 신체 경험을 통해 어떻게 구체화될 수 있는지를 탐구하는 것이다. 이러한 시도는 육화 개념을 형이상학적 담론에서 실존적 의미로 확장하여, 육화 논의의 현실적 기초를 마련하는 데 기여할 것이다.
The purpose of this paper is to rediscover the meaning of the body in the Christian doctrine of incarnation through St. Maximus’ incarnation theory and to explore its specificity through Merleau-Ponty’s theory of bodily perception in order to discuss it from an existential perspective. Incarnation presupposes an opposition between divinity and humanity, mind and body, senses and intellect, but the Christian doctrine of incarnation has argued for the unity and coexistence of these contrasts in Jesus Christ. This is because the unity of humanity and divinity in the body of Christ, and the unity of the created world as a body in Jesus Christ, is the ultimate purpose of incarnation. Previous studies of the incarnation have focused primarily on its spiritual and symbolic meaning or doctrinal significance. This means that the physical and concrete aspects of the incarnation have been relatively under-explored. This paper seeks to fill this gap in existing discussions by explaining incarnation through the lens of body perception, which focuses on the body and corporeality. Bodily perception is a theoretical framework that explores how the body experiences and understands the world and helps shed new light on incarnation. It is an attempt to find the existential meaning of the concept of incarnation through the body, revealing how existence in the world is realized on a bodily level. It is also a phenomenological commentary on the role of the body in Maximus’ incarnation theory as a crucial mediator between divinity and humanity and between the sensory and intellectual worlds. This suggests that incarnation is not only a transcendent act of God, but also an existential experience of being in the world through the body and corporeality. In conclusion, this study aims to contribute to the contemporary reinterpretation of Christian theology by reinterpreting the physical and existential dimensions of incarnation. It explores how religious values can be embodied through the material world and bodily experience through the corporeality of incarnation. This attempt will extend the concept of incarnation from metaphysical discourse to existential meaning, contributing to a more realistic grounding of the incarnation debate.
