최근 인문학 연구와 교육 방법론으로 인문정보학(Cultural Informatics)과 디지털인문학(Digital Humanities)에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 이러한 방법론은 전통적인 인문학 연구 방법에 디지털 기술을 접목시켜 새로운 해석과 발견을 가능하게 한다. 본 연구는 중국 청나라 말기의 서구기행문 연구에 이 방법론을 적용하여 새로운 지식을 발견하고, 보다 정밀한 분석을 수행하고자 한다. 이 연구는 청말 시기 외교관이었던 설복성이 영국, 프랑스, 이탈리아, 벨기에에 출사하고 지은 《출사영법의비사국일기》를 바탕으로 디지털 문화지도를 만드는 것을 목표로 한다. 이를 통해 19세기 중국과 서양 간의 상호작용과 인식을 반영하는 역사적, 문화적 맥락을 제공하고자 한다. 설복성의 여행 경로를 디지털 방식으로 보존하고 시각화함으로써 현대적인 역사 데이터 해석을 제공하는 것이 주요 목표이다. 연구는 설복성의 전기적 연구, 일지 내용 분석, 관련 데이터베이스 설계 및 구축, 그리고 QGIS를 사용한 디지털 지도 생성 과정을 포함한다. 설복성의 《출사영법의비사국일기》는 서구 문명과 중국의 전통적 관념 간의 충돌과 융합을 생생하게 보여주며, 그의 기록은 중국의 근대화와 개혁을 모색하는 중요한 자료로 평가된다. 디지털 인문학적 접근은 전통적인 문헌 연구 방식과는 달리, 문헌의 시각적 구현과 상호작용성을 통해 더욱 풍부한 분석과 해석을 가능하게 한다. 본 연구에서 필자는 디지털 지도 제작을 통해 설복성의 여행 경로와 관찰 내용을 시각적으로 이해할 수 있도록 하였다. 또한 각 지점에서의 주요 관찰과 기록을 시각적으로 배열함으로써 설복성이 주목한 정치적, 경제적, 군사적 요소들을 보다 명확하게 이해할 수 있도록 하였다.
Recently, there has been increasing interest in Cultural Informatics and Digital Humanities as methodologies for humanities research and education. These approaches integrate digital technology with traditional humanities research methods, enabling new interpretations and discoveries. This study aims to apply these methodologies to the research of late Qing Dynasty travel writings about the West, to uncover new knowledge and conduct more precise analyses. This research focuses on creating a digital cultural map based on Xue Fucheng’s “Diary of My Diplomatic Mission to England, France, Italy, and Belgium,” written during his diplomatic missions to these countries in the late Qing period. The goal is to provide a historical and cultural context that reflects the interactions and perceptions between China and the West in the 19th century. The primary objective is to preserve and visualize Xue Fucheng’s travel routes digitally, thus offering a modern interpretation of historical data. The research includes a biographical study of Xue Fucheng, analysis of the diary contents, design and construction of a related database, and the creation of a digital map using QGIS. Xue Fucheng’s “Diary of My Diplomatic Mission to England, France, Italy, and Belgium” vividly illustrates the clash and fusion between Western civilization and traditional Chinese concepts, and his records are considered important materials for exploring China’s modernization and reforms. Unlike traditional literature research methods, the digital humanities approach enables richer analyses and interpretations through the visual representation and interactivity of texts. In this study, I have created a digital map to visually comprehend Xue Fucheng’s travel routes and observations. Additionally, by visually arranging the key observations and records from each location, it allows for a clearer understanding of the political, economic, and military elements that Xue Fucheng focused on.
