본 논문은 언어사회화의 주요 연구 영역 중 하나인 또래 담화 연구의 이론적 지향및 주요 연구 결과를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 구체적으로는 또래 언어사회화 연구의 학사적 맥락을 언어사회화를 비롯한 언어인류학, 사회과학의 아동 연구와의 관련성 속에서 설명하고, 주요 연구 성과를 또래 담화와 또래 문화, 또래 담화를 통한 문화재생산, 또래 담화와 언어 경관의 변화라는 세 영역을 중심으로 소개한다. 논문은 언어를 매개로 한 또래 상호작용이 언어발달의 주요 기제일 뿐만 아니라 또래 문화를 구성및 재구성하고, 사회 범주나 정체성 등의 주요 사회문화적 주제들을 재생산해내며, 더나아가 언어적, 사회정치적 지형의 변화에도 영향을 미치는 역동적 장임을 보여준다.
This article provides a review of peer language socialization approach, a research area that combines the language socialization perspective with a conversation-analytic one which focuses on moment-to-moment processes of children’s interaction with one another in their own peer groups. After introducing the historical backgrounds and theoretical underpinnings of peer language socialization research, it discusses three major themes and findings of this area: (1) how peer talk establishes and maintains peer culture (2) how peer talk repro duce issues asso ciated with so cial catego ries and identities (3) how peer talk maintain and transform sociopolitical and linguistic landscapes.
