본 연구는 영화를 이용한 대학의 교양 영어 수업이 하위권 학습자들의 듣기 능력향상에 미치는 영향에 대해 살펴보고, 특히 영화의 어떠한 특성이 듣기 실력 향상과 관련이 있는지 살펴보고자 한다. 연구의 참여자는 교양 영어를 수강하는하위권 영어 학습자인 15명의 대학생이며, 7주에 걸쳐 영화에 기반한 듣기 수업을 시행하였다. 듣기 능력의 향상도를측정하기 위해 실전 TOEIC 듣기 테스트를 통하여 사전과 사후 점수의 결과를 비교하였다. 주된 관심사는 하위권학습자들의 듣기 능력 향상이었으며, 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. TOEIC 듣기를 영역별로 세분화하여 분석한 결과, 각 영역에서 차이가 나타났다. ‘사진 묘사’의 Part 1과 ‘질의응답’의 Part 2에서는 듣기 능력의 유의미한 향상이 나타나지않았지만 ‘짧은 대화’의 Part 3에서는 듣기 능력의 향상이 확인되었다. 특히 듣기 시험의 어려운 부분 중 하나인Part 3에서는 대화가 길어지면서 세부 사항과 주제를 파악하기 어려워지는데, 이 부분에서 듣기 능력이 향상되었다는결과를 보여주었다. 이는 영화를 통한 듣기 학습이 특히 하위 수준의 학습자들에게, TOEIC 듣기 영역 중 Part 3의‘짧은 대화’ 형식의 대화에 효과적일 수 있음을 시사한다. 영화를 폭넓게 활용한 듣기 수업은 원어민 화자의 빠른발화 속도에 대한 적응과 발화된 내용의 세부 의미를 이해하고 추론할 수 있는 듣기 능력을 향상시켜 효과적인의사소통을 위한 언어 기술을 습득할 수 있게 된다는 점에서 효율적인 교수 방안으로 채택될 수 있을 것이다.
This study examined the effect of utilizing movies on improving the listening skills of low-level learners in an English class, and investigated which movie characteristics were associated with enhanced listening proficiency. The participants were 15 EFL students with low-level English proficiency. The study incorporated movie-based listening activities over a period of seven weeks. To measure the improvement in listening abilities, both the pre- and post-test scores of actual TOEIC listening were analyzed. The TOEIC listening test was divided into its respective sections and differences were observed in each area. While no significant improvement in listening proficiency was found in Part 1 "Photographs" and Part 2 "Question-Response," enhanced listening skills were evident in Part 3 "Conversations." Part 3, which is particularly challenging in listening tests,involves longer dialogues, making it difficult to grasp details and topics. The findings suggest that incorporating movies into an English class tailored for low-level learners may enhance listening skills, specifically the "Conversation" structure found in Part 3 of the TOEIC listening section. More precisely, it aids learners in developing a positive adaptation to the fast-speech rate of native speakers and improves their inference abilities, which are crucial for successful communication. This study thoroughly explores the impact of movies on the TOEIC listening section, an aspect that has been underexplored in previous research.
