본 논문은 미국 종교 윤리학의 지형을 개괄하면서, 어떻게 그 방법론적 전제와 가치, 그리고 비교 방법론이 한국 상황에 시사점을 가지는지 고찰한다. 종교 윤리학은 종교학과 도덕 철학이 교차하는 학문 분과로서 개인과 사회의 도덕을 성찰하면서, 종교적 타자와 자기 지평에 관한 기술적 작업과 규범적인 판단, 그리고 메타 윤리적 인식을 지향한다. 종교 윤리학은 비판적 인문주의적 작업으로서, 평등성과 다원주의라는 가치를 바탕으로, 타자에 대한 정교한 해석과 규범적 판단과 사회 비판을 수행하고 간-문화적 소통, 환경 세계적 관심을 증진한다. 종교 윤리학은 자아-타자 이해를 추구하는 비교 작업에서 일반 이론이나 특수 사실 묘사를 넘어서 두터운 자아-타자 이해와 그 연관 관계를 분석하며, 서로 공유되는 개념들과 해석의 가능성을 추적한다. 비판적 인문주의로서 종교 윤리학은 다원화, 세속화된 한국상황에서 간-종교적 공존에 이바지하며 이를 향한 규범적 입장과 판단, 사회 비판을 증진하며, 적절한 비교 방법론을 바탕으로 자아-타자 이해를 심화시킬 수 있다.
This paper provides an overview of the landscape of religious ethics within 3) religious studies in the U.S., examining how its methodological premises, values, and comparative methodologies have implications for the Korean context. As a discipline at the intersection of religious studies and moral philosophy, religious ethics reflects on the morality of individuals and societies, while engaging with descriptive works, normative judgment, and meta-ethical awareness. As a branch of critical humanism, religious ethics promotes elaborate interpretations of the position of the other, normative judgment, social criticism, intercultural communication, and the concern for environment, based on its cherished values of equality and pluralism. In its comparative work for understanding the self and the other, religious ethics looks beyond general theories or descriptions of particular facts to analyze the dynamic connections between the self and the other, tracing shared concepts or intersecting interpretive possibilities. As a critical humanism, religious ethics contributes to inter-religious coexistence and promotes to develop normative positions, judgment, and social criticism in the multi-religious and secularized Korean context, while deepening self-other understanding based on appropriate comparative methodologies.
