This study investigates the syntax of binominal each (BE) in English. Since Burzio (1981, 1986), BE has been analyzed as an LF anaphor satisfying Principle A condition (Chomsky, 1981). However, challenges to the Principle A-based account have arisen because unlike anaphors, BEs are not licensed as Exceptional Case Marking (ECM) subjects. Studies have suggested that the syntax of BEs involves either LF movement (Safir & Stowell, 1987) or overt movement (Boecks & Hornstein, 2005) of a partial element out of a larger phrase containing BE, hence subextraction. In ECM constructions, such derivation is blocked because subextraction from ECM subjects violates the Subject Condition (Chomsky 1973). This study, however, demonstrates that there is no strong correlation between the distribution of BE and subextractability. This paper aims to advocate for the Principle A-based analysis by proposing that ECM BE instances violate the locality condition for anaphors.
