본 논문은 앵글로-색슨인의 브리튼 이주와 브리튼의 앵글로-색슨화에 대해 알아본다. 5세기 초 로마 군단이 철수한 후 브리튼은 군사적으로 취약했다. 이에 브리톤인은 픽트족의 침입을 자체적으로 방어하기 어렵게 되자 앵글로-색슨인을 용병으로 불러들였다. 용병으로 브리튼 땅을 밟은 앵글로-색슨인 무리는 픽트족 문제를해결한 후 브리톤인과 대결하여 점차 브리튼을 장악하였고, 결국 브리튼을 앵글로색슨화 하였다. 이런 역사적 과정을 설명하는 데는 여러 논쟁점이 있다. 예컨대 브리튼으로 이주해온 앵글로-색슨인의 규모가 어느 정도였으며, 또 이주자인 그들이어떻게 토착 브리톤인을 압도하여 브리튼 사회를 앵글로-색슨화하였느냐 문제가그것이다. 본 논문에서는 앵글로-색슨인의 이주과 브리튼의 앵글로-색슨화를 서사적으로 제시한다. 동시에 주요 쟁점을 논의한다.
This paper examines the Anglo-Saxon migration to Britain and the Anglo-Saxonization of Britain. After the withdrawal of the Roman legions in the early 5th century, Britain became militarily vulnerable. Unable to defend themselves against Picts invasions, the Britons called Anglo-Saxons as mercenaries. The Anglo-Saxon hordes who came to Britain as mercenaries solved the Picts’ problem and then confronted the Britons, gradually taking control of Britain and eventually Anglo-Saxonizing it. This historical process is controversial. For example, how large was the Anglo-Saxon migration to Britain, and how did they overwhelm the native Britons and Anglo-Saxonize British society? This paper presents a narrative of Anglo-Saxon migration and the Anglo-Saxonization of Britain, and discusses the controversial issues
