폴 길로이는 다문화 사회의 정치적 문화 영역에서 윤리와 정치 문제를 다루면서, 현대 다문화 사회의 갈등과 대립을 식민과 제국 그리고 인종의 역사와의 연관을통해 이해하고자 노력한다. 폴 길로이는 영국의 다문화 사회는 포스트식민 멜랑콜리라는 병리적 상태에 머물러 있으며, 그로부터 벗어나기 위해서는 식민 지배, 인종주의, 에스니시티 절대주의의 잔혹한 역사를 비판적으로 성찰하여, 왜곡되고 환상적인 영국 정체성이라는 담론적 구성물의 기능과 효과를 인식해야만 한다고 조언한다. 길로이는 작은 차이의 나르시시즘은 상생적 또는 행성적 존재로서의 ‘하나의 인류’를 망각하지 않는 코스모폴리탄적 연대를 통해 극복될 수 있다는 희망을 오늘날의 다문화 사회의 일상적 삶에서 확인하고자 한다.
Addressing issues of ethics and politics in the political and cultural spheres of multicultural societies, Paul Gilroy seeks to understand the conflicts and confrontations of contemporary multicultural societies through their connections to history of colonization, empire, and race. He argues that Britain’s multicultural society is stuck in a pathological state of postcolonial melancholy, and that in order to move out of it, we must critically recognize the function and effect of the discursive construct of a distorted and illusory British identity by reflecting on the brutal history of colonial domination, racism, and ethnic absolutism. Gilroy seeks to affirm in the everyday life of today’s multicultural societies the hope that the narcissism of small differences can be overcome through cosmopolitan solidarity if we do not lose sight of ‘one humanity’ as a coexistent or planetary entity.
