이 연구는 국가의 병역 동원에 대한 20대 남성들의 자발적 예속을 살핀다. 특히 법적 권력과 생활관 규율, 자기계발 정책이라는 동원 장치에 대해 남성들이 어떻게 조응하는가를 분석하고 이를 통해 남성들이 해석하는 병역 동원의 의미를 논한다. 자발적 예속이란 동원과 동의 사이에 모순된 복잡성을 드러내는, 남성들의 병역 동원에 대한 자기통치를 일컫는다. 남성들은 피할 수 없는 법적 권력 앞에서 자기 생존이라는 합리적 이유로 강제적 병역의무에 예속된다. 병역의무에서 탈피할 수 없을 때 오는 불안과 두려움, 억울함 앞에서 남성들은 군 복무를 자기성장의 시간으로 설정하고 경쟁력있는 자기 만들기의 유용한 시간으로 재구성한다. 신자유주의 사회에서 성장한 남성들은 군 복무 경험을 신자유주의 문화 논리 안에서 해석하고 표현하는데, 병역을 노동으로 인지하는 경향이 점차 두드러지는 현상도 국가이념에 기반한 사회경제적 동의를 사회적 인정과 실리적 추구에 기반한 사회경제적 동의로 조정하려는 합리적 행위의 표출이다. 이 연구는 젠더화된 병역 동원이 신자유주의 맥락에서 어떻게 의미화되는가를 남성들의 자기통치라는 측면에서밝히는데 의의가 있다.
This study examines the voluntary servitude of men in their 20s to the state's mobilization for military service. In particular, it analyzes how men respond to the mobilization apparatus of legal power based on military service law, discipline in barracks and self-improvement policies in the military, and discusses the meaning of military service interpreted by men. Voluntary servitude refers to the process of men's participation in military mobilization, which reveals the contradictory complexity between mobilization and consent. Men are subjected to compulsory military service obligations for the rational reasons of self-survival in the face of inescapable legal power. Faced with the anxiety, fear, and unfairness when they can not escape from military service obligations, men reconstruct military service as a time of self-growth and usefulness for competitive self-making. Men, growing up in a neoliberal society, tend to interpret and articulate their military service experiences within neoliberal cultural logic. And the increasingly prominent tendency to perceive military service as labor is also a manifestation of rational behavior that attempts to readjust socioeconomic consent based on national ideology to socioeconomic consent based on social recognition and practical pursuits. Thus this study contributes to shedding light on how gendered military mobilization is signified in a neoliberal context.
