최근에 발굴된 손창섭 소설인 ｢애정무효｣는 1959년 소설계에 발표된 작품이고, 이 소설에서 나타나는 ‘애정’의 양태는 손창섭의 1950년대에서 1960년대로 전환되는 소설의 방향성을 해석할 수 있는 중요한 기표이다. 이 소설에서 제시되는‘애정’의 정서적 추동은 이기주의와 이타성을 동시에 지니는 ‘양가성(兩價性)’을 내재한다. 궁극적으로 이 애정은 공고하게 짜인 가부장제의 굴레를 벗어나기 위한 하나의 방편에 불과하다는 점에서 비극적 삶의 비애가 드러난다. ‘애정’이라는 낭만적인 인간의 감정은 전후 시대의 참담한 인식 지점을 역설적으로 드러내는 요소로 전락해 있다. 즉, ｢애정무효｣에 제시된 ‘애정’은 현실과 어긋난 추상적이면서 이상적 인간의 행위를 드러내면서 극복 불가능한 삶의 굴레를 부각한다. 이는 전후의 사람들이 전쟁 현실에서 벗어났지만, 전쟁의 아픔을 내면화하며 살 수밖에 없었던 모순적 삶의 진실과도 맞닿아 있다. 그래서 ‘애정’은 소설의 제목처럼 성립되는 것이아니라 ‘무효’로 끝날 수밖에 없다.
｢Invalidity of Love｣, the novel by Son, Changseob discovered recently, is the work published in Soseolgye in 1959. And the state of ‘affection’ shown in the novel is an important signifier which can interpret the direction of Son, Changseob’s novels which were changed from 1950s to 1960s. ‘Ambivalence’ which simultaneously has egoism and altruism is inherent in an emotional impetus of ‘affection’ presented by the novel. Eventually, this affection reveals griefs in a tragic life in that it is just an expedient to be liberated from the bondage of well-organized patriarchy. A human romantic emotion called ‘affection’ fell to an element which paradoxically reveals a point of perceiving horrible sights of the post-war period. That is, ‘affection’ presented in ｢Invalidity of Love｣ reveals human abstract and ideal behaviors which are contrary to the reality and accentuates the insurmountable fetters of life. This is connected by a fact of contradictory life that people escaped from the reality of the war after it, but they had to live internalizing the pain of war. Therefore, ‘affection’ was bound to end in ‘invalidity’, not being valid like the title of the novel.
