러시아제국과 소련의 지배를 거치면서 외부 이슬람세계와 단절되고 침체기를 겪었던 중앙아시아 이슬람은 소련으로부터 독립을 한 후 재건과 부흥기를 맞이하였다. 이슬람의 재건과 부흥은 독립국가로서 중앙아시아 국가들이 이슬람전통과 문화를 재건하고 정치지도자들이 대중의 지지를 확보하려는 노력 하에 진행되었다. 또한 독립 후 중앙아시아 국가들은 외부 이슬람세계와 다시 관계를 맺어 나갔는데 그 과정에서 이슬람선교사들이 들어오고 이슬람국가들의 재정적 지원이 이루어졌다. 모스크건설이나 이슬람교육기관 수립에 그 영향이 두드려졌다. 독립 후 이슬람의 재건과 부흥이 이루어지면서 무슬림 대중 개인의 종교성 역시 강화되고 있다. 이런 과정에서 단순히 전통적인 이슬람의 재건을 넘어서 근본주의적 이슬람의 영향력도 나타나고 있다. 이에 대해 중앙아시아 정부는 민감하게 반응하고 있으며 온건한 이슬람인 하나피즘이나 수피즘을 복원하고 강조한다. 독립 후 30여년이 지난 지금 중앙아시아 이슬람은 정치적, 인구학적 변화속에서 민족적인 전통적 이슬람이냐 범이슬람주의냐 그리고 온건한 포용적 이슬람이냐 근본적이고 정치적인 이슬람이냐 라는 갈림길로 나아가는 것처럼 보인다.
The Islamic landscape of Central Asia, which suffered a period of stagnation and disconnection from the broader Islamic community during the era of Russian Empire and Soviet domination, faced a period of reconstruction and revival following its liberation from the Soviet Union. The reconstruction and the revival of Islam unfolded through the efforts of independent Central Asian nations to rebuild Islamic traditions and cultures, with political leaders endeavoring to secure support from the public. Furthermore, the Central Asian countries re-established relations with the outside Islamic world after independence. This re-engagement facilitated the influx of Islamic missionaries and financial support from Islamic countries, significantly contributing to the construction of mosques and the establishment of Islamic educational institutions. As Islam was rebuilt and revived following independence, the religiosity of the Muslim individuals was also strengthening. In this process, the influence of fundamental Islam is also emerging alongside the reconstruction of traditional Islam. Central Asian governments are responding sensitively to this trend, directing efforts toward restoration and emphasis of moderate Islam of Hanafism and Sufism. More than three decades post-independence, recent Central Asian Islam stands at a crossroads between national traditional Islam or pan-Muslimism, and moderate inclusive Islam or fundamental and political Islam amid political and demographic changes.
