이 글은 19세기 한문소설 <낙동야언>의 남복개착 화소를 중심으로 그 특징적 양상과 성격을 정의하고 소설사적 의미를 조망해 보았다. 지금까지 남복개착 화소 연구는 여성영웅과 결부되었지, 다른 장르에서의 남복개착 성격을 탐구한 예는 부족했다. 이에 이 글은 <낙동야언>을 대상으로 남복개착 서사의 다른 면모를 살펴보고자 했다. 그 서사 양상을 살펴본 결과, 여성이 문제 상황을 겪을 때 해결을 위한 수단으로 남장이 활용되며, 그것은 일시적 화소로 소모된다는 특징을 갖고 있었다. 이것을 본고에서는 문제 해결형 서사로 정의하였다. 이 문제 해결형 서사는 여성영웅이 가진 활약형 서사와 성격이 다르며, <낙동야언>이 활약형 서사와 다른 서사 자장에서 배태되었음을 유추하게 한다. 이를 살펴보기 위해 17세기 남복개착 화소가 나타난 작품을 중심으로 비교해보니 17세기 작품들에는 <낙동야언>처럼 문제 해결형 서사가 존재하지만, 그것은 여성의 생존 수단이나 남성을 희롱하는 데 대체로 국한되어 활용되고 있었다. 이것은 남녀의 결연 문제를 적극적으로 해결하려는 <낙동야언>의 남복개착 화소와 차이가 존재한다. 마지막으로 장편가문소설의 남복개착 화소와 비교한 결과, 작품마다 두 유형을 복합적으로 가지고 나타나 있지만, 남장에 대한 인식 태도가 부정적이며, 이것은 남장 이후 갈등을 초래하게 만든다는 특징을 갖고 있어 남장에 대해 아무런 선입견을 갖지 않는 <낙동야언>과도 다르다. 결론적으로 <낙동야언>의 남장 화소는 문제 해결형 서사에 기반하고 있다. 무엇보다 그간 남복개착 화소와 달리 문제 해결에 집중해 진정한 사랑을 능동적으로 쟁취하고 있다는 점에서 그 소설사적 의의와 성취를 찾을 수 있다.
This article focuses on the cross-dressing theme of the 19th century Korean-Chinese novel <Nak-dong-ya-eon>, defines its characteristic aspects and characteristics, and examines its meaning in the history of the novel. Until now, research on cross-dressing themes has been linked to female heroes, but there have been insufficient examples of exploring the nature of cross-dressing in other genres. Accordingly, this article attempted to examine other aspects of the cross-dressing narrative. So, as a result of examining the narrative aspect of cross-dressing in <Nak-dong-ya-eon>, it was found that when women experience a problem, cross-dressing is used as a means of solving it, and it has the characteristic of being consumed as a temporary topic. In this paper, this is defined as a problem-solving narrative. The cross-dressing theme of <Nak-dong- ya-eon> is based on a problem-solving narrative. The historical significance of this work can be found in the fact that it focuses on solving problems and actively achieving true love.
