任弘望(1635 ~1715)은 조선 후기 아산 출신의 문인으로, 81세로 생을 마칠 때까지관직 생활을 했던 인물이다. 그는 자신의 관직 생활에 관한 이야기 전반을 기록해 󰡔官職日記󰡕를 저술하였다. 이는 1674년부터 1689년까지 임홍망의 15년 관직 생활이 담긴기록물이다. 1680년 임홍망은 제주 목사로 부임하며 1년 반의 임기 동안 ‘제주 목사 일기’를 저술하였다. 그 내용은 제주와 육지의 왕복 여정, 巡歷을 통한 제주 風情 관찰, 한라산유람으로 요약할 수 있었다. 이를 통해 먼저는 官人 임홍망의 모습을 확인할 수 있었다. 직접 도내를 순시하며 제주의 風土와 백성들의 형편을 살펴, 상정법을 제정해 도민들의 신역을 줄여주고자 하였다. 또 낯선 섬에 적응해가는 육지인 임홍망의 모습도찾아볼 수 있었다. 그는 제주를 오고 가는 항해 여정 중 표류했던 경험, 제주의 여러명소를 방문하고 느낀 소회를 육지인의 입장에서 여실히 기록하였다. 이는 17세기 제주의 일면을 종합적으로 이해할 수 있는 새로운 자료라 할 수 있을 것이다. 본고는 제주 목사 임홍망과 그의 제주 목사 일기를 처음으로 학계에 소개하여 또하나의 새로운 제주 관련 자료를 검토하였다는 의의가 있다. 이는 임홍망 개인 행적은물론, 당시 제주의 풍토와 지역민들의 생활 제반에 대한 증언자료로서 유의미한 자료가 될 것이다.

Yim Hongmang (任弘望, 1635~1715) is a literatus born in Asanduring the late Joseon dynasty who served in the government until hisdeath at 81. He chronicled the entirety of his official career in a workentitled Gwan-jik-il-gi (官職日記). In particular, the work covers thefifteen years of Yim Hongmang’s official career from 1674 to 1689. In 1680, Yim Hongmang was appointed as the governor of Jeju wherehe authored the “Jeju governor diary” during his year-and-a-half term. The content of this diary can be summarized as the round-trip journeysbetween Jeju and the mainland, the observations of the Jeju customsthrough inspections, and the explorations of Halla-mountain. Throughthis, we can first observe the characteristics of Yim Hongmang as agovernment official. After personally inspecting the province andexamining the customs of Jeju and the circumstances of its people, heestablished regional regulations to reduce the burdens of the Jeju people. We can also witness the traces of Yim Hongmang, who is originally fromthe mainland, adapting to the unfamiliar island of Jeju. He vividlyrecorded the experience being adrift during the voyages to and fromJeju and the reflections of a mainlander visiting various attractions inJeju. This allows his diary to be considered a new source of informationthat provides a comprehensive understanding of a facet of Jeju in the17th century. This paper contributes a new piece of Jeju-related material byintroducing Jeju Governor Yim Hongmang and his diary as the Jejugovernor to the academia for the first time. This serves as a meaningfulevidence regarding not only the personal traces of Yim Hongmang butalso the customs and general life of local residents of Jeju.
