이 글은 선과 악의 관계를 동양의 주희와 노자, 서양의 기독교, 칸트, 융을 통해 탐구한 것이다. 흔히는 선과 악은 대립관계[선악불능상립, 모순대립]라고 여겨진다. 그렇지만 선악은 음과 양처럼 서로 간의 대비를 통해 인식되고 명명될 수 있으며, 세상 안에서 늘 공존해왔다[선악불능상무, 일체양분]. 주희, 기독교, 칸트, 노자, 융 모두 선악이 의존과 공존의 관계에 있음을 인식하고 있었다. 그렇지만 주희, 기독교, 칸트의 이상은 어디까지나 악이 없는 선한 세상이었다. 이에 비해 노자는 선과 악은 존재론적으로 새끼줄처럼 꼬여있기에 어느 것이 더 우위에 있지 않으며, 어느 하나를 제거하는 것도 불가하다고 보았다. 보드리야르나 융 또한 유사한 생각을 지니고 있었다. 융에게 악은 선의 그림자이다. 선과 악은 상식과 달리 다른 방향으로 나아가는 것이 아니라 같은 방향으로 나아간다. 선이 커지면 악도 커진다. 따라서 그림자를 지우기보다는 그림자를 인정하는 것이 조화로운 삶을 사는 길이 된다. 지구촌 곳곳에 분쟁이 일어나고 있고 일상생활 곳곳에 혐오가 파고들고 있는 오늘날, 선과 악의 관계를 어떻게 볼 것인지 따라 우리의 행동방향이 결정될 것이기에 이 글에서는 이 문제를 고찰해 보았다. 지금까지 우리가 악을 제어하는 방향에 초점을 두어온 것을 감안한다면, 이제는 선을 내려놓아야 한다는 목소리에도 귀를 기울일 필요가 있다고 생각해본다.
This article explores the relationship between good and evil by comparing the Eastern philosophies of Zhu Xi and Lao Tzu with the Western philosophies of Christianity, Kant, and Jung. Good and evil are commonly thought of as opposites [incompatible, contradictory]. However, they can also be seen as interconnected and coexisting, similar to the dualistic nature of yin and yang. Zhu Xi, Christianity, Kant, Lao Tzu, and Jung all speak of the interdependence and coexistence of good and evil. However, the ideal world of Zhu Xi, Christianity, and Kant is a world without evil. Lao Tzu, on the other hand, believed that good and evil are ontologically intertwined like cords, so that one is not superior to the other, and it is impossible to eliminate either force. Baudrillard and Jung had similar ideas. For Jung, evil is the shadow of good. Contrary to common sense, good and evil do not diverge but rather move in the same direction. The greater the good, the greater the evil, so recognizing the shadow rather than erasing it is the way to live in harmony. In today's world, where conflicts are raging around the globe and hatred is pervading daily lives, the way individuals view the relationship between good and evil will determine the direction of our their actions; therefore, this article examines this issue. Given the focusing on controlling evil, people need to listen to the voices that propose letting go of good.
