이 연구의 목적은 네트워크 분석 방법을 활용하여 『삼대』에 등장하는 인물들의 연결망을 구성하고, 인물들이 네트워크의 ‘중심성’ 개념 안에서 어떤 의미를 갖는지 논의하는 것이다. 특히 이 과정에서 네트워크 분석 방법으로 소설의 주인공을 어떻게 규정할 수 있는가를 살펴보고자 했다. 본고에서는 서사의 주인공이 갖는 네트워크적 특징을 이해하기 위해 연결중심성 및 근접중심성 개념을 활용하였으며, 이를 보완하기 위해 HITS알고리즘과 자동화된 커뮤니티 탐색 방식을 사용했다. 그 결과 『삼대』의 주인공 조덕기는 서사에서 1/3 정도 등장하지 않는 인물임에도 불구하고 네트워크에서 중요도가 가장 높은 인물로 분석되었다. 이는 전체 네트워크와 개별적인 커뮤니티 안에서 조덕기가 인물들을 매개하는 방식과 관련이 있었다. 본 연구는 이러한 논의를 통해 개별적인 문학연구에 의해 해석되어온 문학 텍스트의 의미를 보다 계량적인 차원에서 제시하고 디지털 기술과 문학 사이의 접점을 마련하고자 했다.
The purpose of this study is to use network analysis methods to construct a network of characters appearing in 'Three Generations', and through this, discuss what meaning the characters have within the concept of network centrality. In particular, this study attempted to examine how the main character of the novel can be defined using network analysis methods in this process. In existing research, attention was paid to betweenness centrality and closeness centrality as network characteristics of the main character of the narrative. However, Jo Deok-gi, who is considered the main character of 'Three Generations', found it difficult to fully explain its characteristics through these concepts. To complement this, this paper used the HITS algorithm and automated community search methods among network analysis methods. As a result, Jo Deok-gi was analyzed as the most important character in the network, even though he does not appear in about 1/3 of the narrative. This was related to the way Jo Deok-gi mediates characters within the overall network and individual communities. This was understood to reveal Jo Deok-gi’s character traits of being a middleman. Through these discussions, this study attempted to present the meaning of literary texts that have been interpreted through individual literary research in a more quantitative way and establish a point of contact between digital technology and literature.
