이 연구는 『예안군읍지』 과거조 수록 인물을 중심으로 조선 후기 지방 유생의 수학 형태와 문과 응시 과정이 갖는 특성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 『예안군읍지』 과거조 수록 인물의 과거 관련 정보를 정리하여 시대별로 나타나는 전반적인 특징을 파악하고, 문과 급제 과정에서 각종 시험 응시 이력이 발견되는 이들을 중심으로 문과 응시 실태를 조사하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 예안 지역의 유생들은 식년문과에 다수 합격하여 전형적인 지방 유생의 문과 응시 과정을 가지는 것처럼 보이지만 문과에 응시하기까지 소과나 성균관 과시 우등 등의 세부적인 과정을 살펴보면 전형적인 지방 유생의 특성을 설정하기 어렵다는 것을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 대표적인 예안 유생의 수학 형태를 통해 16세기 후반부터 이들 중 일부는 상경하여 서울에서 관학유생으로서 각종 과시에 응시하는 모습을 보이고, 18~19세기부터는 이들이 지속적으로 성균관 과시에 응시하여 실력을 갈고닦았으며, 성균관 과시에서 받은 은사를 사용하여 문과에 계속해서 도전하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 결과적으로 예안 유생이 보여주는 문과 응시 과정은 지방 유생이 급제한 문과를 단순히 식년시와 경과로 구분하여 살펴보기보다 급제 과정에서 보여주는 다양한 수학 형태와 응시 시험 종류, 주요 급제 경로 등을 함께 살펴볼 필요가 있음을 시사한다.
The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of the Mungwa(文科) examination process of local students in the late Joseon Dynasty, focusing on the people included in the 『Yean Eupji(禮安郡邑誌)』. The test-related information of the people included in the 『Yean Eupji(禮安郡邑誌)』 was organized to understand the overall characteristics of each era, and the status of the Mungwa examination was investigated, focusing on those who were found to have various test exam history during the Mungwa examination process. The research results are as follows. First, many students in the Yean Region have passed regular Mungwa and seem to go through the Mungwa examination process typically shown by local students, but it is difficult to set the typicality of local students by looking at detailed processes such as the passing of Sogwa(小科) or Sungkyunkwan Gwasi(成均館 課試) before taking the Mungwa exam. Second, through the process of taking the Mungwa examination of representative Yean Region students, some of them have been taking various Gwasi as students of national universities in the capital since the late 16th century. From the 18th to 19th centuries, they continued to take the Sungkyunkwan Gwasi to improve their skills, and they continued to challenge the Mungwa using the teacher they received from the Sungkyunkwan Gwasi. As a result, the process of taking the Mungwa examination of Yean region students suggests that it is necessary to examine the various tests taken during the examination process together rather than simply dividing the aspects shown in the Mungwa examination process of local students into regular and irregular tests.
