완판 방각본 <별월봉기>는 1994년 학계에 그 존재가 알려진 이후, 1823년에 간행되었다는 간기의 기록 때문에 현존하는 한글 방각소설 중 간행 연도를 확실하게 알 수 있는 가장 오래 된 작품으로 인정받았다. 그러나 간행 연도에 대한 학계의 관심에 비하여 작품의 내용에 대한 검토나 다른 이본들과의 비교 등은 거의 이루어지지 못했다. 이 논문에서는 <별월봉기>의 내용을, 기존의 <월봉기> 연구에서 중요하게 다루어졌던 이본들과 기존 연구에서는 다루어지지 않았지만 <별월봉기>를 이해하는 데 도움이 되는 몇몇 이본들을 추가하여 비교해 봄으로써 <별월봉기>의 의미와 가치를 밝혀보고자 하였다. 우선, 기존의 <월봉기> 연구에서 이본 비교의 기준으로 삼았던 경판 <월봉기>와 완판 <별월봉기>를 비교해 보았을 때, <별월봉기>는 <월봉기>에서 축약되었거나 탈락된 내용을 충실하게 보존하고 있다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 또한 경판 <월봉기>에 비해 작품 전체 분량(글자수)이 더 많고 내용이 충실하게 나타나는 필사본들과 <별월봉기>를 비교해 보아도 <별월봉기>는 그 어떤 이본보다 내용이 잘 갖추어져 있고 안정적으로 서사와 행문이 전개된다는 사실도 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 이본 비교를 통해서 다음과 같은 두 가지 사실을 유추할 수 있다. 첫째, <별월봉기>가 완성되는 데 영향을 미친 완성도가 높은 <월봉기>가 1823년 이전에 존재했다. 둘째, 원본 또는 선본에 가까운 그 <월봉기>를 부분적으로나마 충실하게 수용해서 완성된 것이 완판 <별월봉기>이다. 다만, <별월봉기>는 현재 상권은 남아있지 않고 하권만 전하는 상태인 데다가 <월봉기>의 후반부 결연담이 나오기 전 작품이 무리하게 완결되었기 때문에, 원본 또는 선본에 가까운 <월봉기>를 재구해 내는 데는 한계가 있다. 따라서 앞으로 <별월봉기>를 기준으로 이와 유사한 내용과 행문을 잘 갖추고 있는 필사본 <월봉기>들을 더 찾아내어 1823년 이전의 원본(또는 선본)에 가까운 <월봉기>를 재구해내는 이본 연구가 필요하게 되었다. 이러한 작업을 통해 조선후기 한글소설 중 상당한 인기를 누렸던 것으로 보이는 <월봉기>를 보다 올바르게 이해할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

After the existence of the woodblock print Byeol-Wolbonggi published in Jeonju became known in academia, Byeol-Wolbonggi was recognized as the oldest work of the woodblock print novel written in Korean because it’s publication records. But compared to the academic interest in publication records, little research has been done on the contents of the work. Therefore, this study attempted to clarify the meaning and value of the Byeol-Wolbonggi by comparing it with other version of Wolbonggi. When comparing Jeonju edition Byeol-Wolbonggi and Seoul edition Wolbonggi that was considered a standard of comparison in the previous study, I found that Byeol-Wolbonggi preserved the abbreviated or eliminated contents of Wolbonggi well. In addition, I found that Byeol-Wolbonggi is better equipped than any other version and that the narrative develops stably. From the above results, we can see the following two facts. First, before 1823, there was Wolbonggi that were more complete than any other current version. Second, Byeol-Wolbonggi was completed by faithfully accepting such works close to the original text. However, there are some limitations that the first volume of the work does not remain and it was completed before the story of the second half of Wolbonggi was told. Therefore, in the future, it is necessary to find a well-contained manuscript and to reconstruct the original text before 1823. Through such research, it is expected that Wolbonggi will be able to be understood more correctly.
