한국과 이탈리아는 2024년 수교 140주년을 맞이하였다. 구한말 체결된 수호통상조약은 오래가지 못하고 을사조약과 한일합방으로 그 효력이 정지되었으며, 2차대전이 지난 1950년대 후반에 양자관계가 재개되어 오늘에 이른다. 이 소고에서는 140년의 관계를 살피면서 최근 비약적으로 발전하고 있는 양자의 전략적 동반자 관계를 살피고 있다. 분석 결과 이전의 중소기업 협력이나 문화예술분야의 교류에서 최근에는 반도체, 배터리, 방산, 항공우주 등의 분야의 첨단산업으로 논의가 진행되고 있으며, 글로벌 공급망 및 가치사슬의 변화와 함께 경제안보 측면에서 양자의 협력수요가 확대되고 있다는 사실을 파악하였다. 한국과 이탈리아는 경제적으로 선진국이면서 정치외교 분야에서는 중견국의 위상을 공유하고 있으므로 양자에 더해 지역 및 글로벌 협력이 더욱 강화될 것으로 전망된다.
Korea and Italy will celebrate the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2024. The Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation signed by Korea and Italy did not last long, and its validity was suspended due to the Treaty of Ulsa and the annexation of Korea by Imperial Japan, and bilateral relations were resumed in the late 1950s after World War II, and continue to this day. This essay examines the 140-year relationship between the two countries and the strategic partnership that has been developing dramatically in recent years. As a result of the analysis, it was found that discussions have recently progressed from cooperation between small and medium-sized enterprises and exchanges in the fields of culture and arts towards high-tech industries in fields such as semiconductors, batteries, defense and aerospace, and that the demand for bilateral cooperation in terms of economic security is expanding along with changes in the global supply and value chain. As Korea and Italy are economically advanced countries and share the status of middle power in the field of politics and diplomacy, it is expected to be further strengthened in regional and global cooperation in the coming years.
