이 논문은 교양교육으로서의 국부론 읽기의 한 방법을 제시하고 있다. 비전공자의 국부론 읽기는 전공자의 그것과 동일할 수 없다. 따라서 방대한 분량과 많은 경제적 주제가 펼쳐지고 있는 국부론 읽기에는 교양교육의 목표에 부합하는 적절한 방법이 모색되어야 한다. 본 연구는 국부론 읽기의 적절한 방법의 모색이 적절한 독서 주제의 선정과 관련된다고 판단한다. 주지하다시피, 고전은 인간의 삶에 등장하는 근본적이면서도 보편적인 문제를 제기한다. 그리고 고전읽기는 그러한 문제에 대응하여 보편적 가치를 추구하는 과정이 단편적인 해답에 안주하지 않고 고통스런 탐색적 사유의 과정이 될 것을 요구한다. 본 연구는 국부론의 핵심주제를 지적탁월성과 도덕적 탁월성의 성취라는 교양교육의 목표에 부합할 수 있도록 선정하였다. 즉, 부의 의미, 분석방식(인간 본성의 이해), 풍요의 원천으로서의 시장경제, 가치생산과 분배적 정의, 자본축적과 경제성장, 그리고 시장과 도덕 등 여섯 개로 선정하고 그러한 주제의식이 명확히 드러나는 부분들을 국부론에서 찾아보고 그 의미를 탐구하고 있다.
This paper proposes a way to read the literature of Wealth of Nations(hereafter WN) as a liberal arts education. A non-major's reading of WN cannot be the same as a major's, so there must be an appropriate method for reading WN that meets the goals of a liberal arts education, given its vast scope and many economic topics. We believe that the search for an appropriate way to read the WN is related to the selection of appropriate reading topics. As you know, the classics raise fundamental and universal issues in human life, and the reading of the classics demands that the search for universal values in response to those issues be a painful process of exploratory thought that does not settle for partial answers. This study selects the core topics of WN to meet the goal of liberal arts education, which is to achieve intellectual excellence and moral excellence: the meaning of wealth, the method of analysis (understanding human nature), the market economy as a source of abundance, value production and distributive justice, capital accumulation and economic growth, and markets and morality, and identifies and explores the meaning of these topics in the WN.
