화산섬인 제주도에는 다종다양한 돌문화경관이 존재하며 ICOMOS에서는 이러한 제주 돌문화경관을 세계유산잠정목록 유산 후보로 추천하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 세계유산 비교연구의 현황 및 사례를 분석하고, ‘화산(volcano)’이라는 키워드를 통해 추출된 세계유산 중에서 제주 돌문화경관과 비교 가능한 5건의 유산을 선별하였다. 이후 각 유산의등재기준을 중심으로 비교 분석하여 제주 돌문화경관의 독특성을 밝히고자 하였다. 그 결과 제주 돌문화경관은 세계유산으로 등재된 유산들과 비교하였을 때 유일하게 생산(경제)용, 신앙용, 건축용, 방어⋅통신용의 유산 요소를 모두 갖추고있으며, 다양성 및 독창성이 돋보인다. 또한 ‘화산’ 키워드로 추출된 세계유산들은 등재기준 중 문화유산에 해당하는(ⅰ), (ⅲ), (ⅴ), (ⅵ)을 포함하고 있는데 제주 돌문화경관은 등재기준 (iii) 또는 (ⅵ)을 적용하기에 적합할 것이라 사료된다.
Jeju Island, a volcanic island, has a variety of stone cultural landscapes, and ICOMOS is recommending this Jeju Stone Cultural Landscape as a candidate for the World Heritage Tentative List. In this study, we analyzed the current status and cases of World Heritage comparative research and selected five heritage sites that were comparable to Jeju Stone Cultural Landscape among the World Heritage sites extracted through the keyword ‘volcano’. Afterwards, we attempted to reveal the uniqueness of Jeju’s Stone Cultural landscape by conducting a comparative analysis focusing on the registration criteria for each heritage. As a result, compared to heritage sites registered as World Heritage sites, Jeju’s Stone Cultural Landscape is unique in that it possesses all heritage elements for (economic) production, religious, architectural, and defense/communication purposes, and stands out for its diversity and originality. In addition, the World Heritage properties extracted under the keyword ‘volcano’ already include (i), (iii), (v), and (vi), which are cultural heritage, among the registration criteria, and Jeju Stone Cultural Landscape meets the registration criteria (iii) or it is judged to be suitable to apply (vi).
