서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원에 소장된 ｢당화초본중국지도｣는 중국의 황하와 경항대운하를 주제로 비단에 그려진 산수화풍의 채색 대형지도이다. 왜곡이 심하고 오래되어 손상이 심하지만 청나라 전성기의 수많은 자연지명과 인문지명이 수록되고, 행정지명과 군사지명이 성곽 기호 속에 표시되어 있다. 홍수 때 황하를 방어하기 위한 복잡한 제방과, 운하를 따라 많은 수문과 수리시설들이 상세히 그려져 있다. 접혀지고 퇴색되어 잘 보이지 않는 지명을 식별하여 컴퓨터로 선명하게 그려보았다. 지명데이터베이스를 만들고 이 지명들이 지금의 어디에 위치하는지를 현대지도에서 플로트하여 지도를 이해하려 시도하였다.
The “Danghwachobonjunggukjido”, one of the Kyujanggak collection at Seoul National University, is a large-size Chinese map on silk which depicts landscapes of the Yellow River and the Grand Canal in China. Although it is severely distorted and damaged due to its old age, it shows numerous place names of natural sites and manmade structures of the Qing Dynasty. It also shows administrative and military place names marked in the fortress symbols. It describes details of complex embankments, floodgates, and repairing facilities along the river canals for protection from the Yellow River floods. I identified the place names which were folded and faded, and drew it clearly using a computer. I made a database of place names and tried to match them with current place names by searching modern map.
