이 글은 초국적 감정 산업의 정동 경제를 통해 아시안 아메리칸의 감정이 무엇을 드러내고, 무엇을 가리고 있는지 살펴보려는 시도다. <비프>는 서로에게 분노를 표출하는 대니와 에이미의 동일시라는 서사적 귀결을 취한다. 그 결과, 대니와 에이미 각자에게 상이한 방식으로 축적된 역사적 감정은 보편화된다. 분노 너머의 지평에 놓인 ‘아메리칸’의 우정은 인종화된 ‘아시안’의 역사적 감정이 지워졌을 때야 비로소 도달할 수 있는 것이다. 이는 <엘리멘탈>에서 서로 다른 인종 간의 사랑이 성립하는 과정과 동궤를 이룬다. <엘리멘탈>의 내러티브는 이주민이 정착민과 섞임으로써 자신의 차이를 국가에 ‘기부’하면 ‘이상’이 달성되고, 그 차이는 사랑으로 ‘환원’될 것이라는 함의를 지닌 것이다. 초국적 지평을 전제로, 아시안 아메리칸의 감정은 보편화되고 있지만, 그 감정은 자본주의와 인종화 등의 조건에 의해 중층결정된 초개체적 경험과 역사의 산물이다. 그런 점에서 경계와 위계를 넘어 관계를 맺기 위한 감정의 회로는 서로 간의 불일치가 연결의 기초를 제공할 수 있도록 하는 차이에 대한 개방성과 함께 구축될 수 있다.
This study examines what Asian-American emotions reveal and what they obscure in the affective economy of the transnational emotion industry. The narrative culmination of Beef occurs in the moment when Danny and Amy take out their anger on each other. The racialized historical feelings that accumulated in different ways for Danny and Amy are universalized. "Their American" friendship that lies on the horizon that goes beyond anger can only be reached when their historicized feelings of "being Asian" are erased. This parallels the development of love between members of different races in Elemental. The narrative of Elemental implies that if migrants "give" their differences to the nation by blending in with the "settled population, an ideal" will be achieved, and the differences will be "returned" with love. Assuming a transnational horizon, Asian-American feelings are universalized, but they are the product of a trans-individual experience and history that is overdetermined by the conditions of capitalism and racialization. The emotional circuitry for relating across boundaries and hierarchies can be constructed with an openness to difference that allows disagreement to provide the basis for connection.
