이 글은 『조양보』가 번역을 통해 보호국 체제에 대응하기 위한 이념을 모색한 양상을 제시했다. 『신민설』 8절을 역술해 한국 독자를 위한 논설로 바꾼 『조양보』의 「인인당주의어권리사상(人人當主義於權利思想)」을 분석해 생략과 수정의 과정을 재구했다. 이 기사는 이 잡지의 주필인 장지연이 『신민설』의 역술에 자작을 조합한 논설인 「자강주의」․「국가빈약지고」와 동일한 방법론을 보여준다. 이 작업을 통해 『신민설』 8절에 수용된 예링의 『권리를 위한 투쟁』의 개인주의가 중국을 거쳐 대한제국에 다다른 과정을 재구했다. 법과 권리의 개인성을 자각해 이를 위해 투쟁하는 개인이란 예링의 이론은 국권을 위한 권리사상으로 『신민설』에서 변주되었고 『조양보』는 중국인을 위한 논설을 한국인의 각성을 위한 것으로 바꾸었다. 역술과 자작의 조합 양상을 통해 근대적 이념을 수용한 학습 과정이 구체적으로 드러난다. 『조양보』의 역술은 국민 사이의 평등을 강조한 『신민설』의 결론을 생략해 서구적 개인주의를 경계하는 한국 계몽주의의 일면을 보여준다. 한편 『조양보』는 더 많은 독자를 확보한다는 취지를 가졌기에 『대한자강회월보』보다 역술 과정에서 한국어 통사구조를 더 크게 반영하였다. 이 역술은 전근대 문언 문인에서 대중매체 작가로의 정체성 전환을 보여주는 것이기도 하다.
This paper is studying the seek of idea in Joyangbo to confront a protectorate system by translation. I analyze localizing and adapting process of Joyangbo's leading article, “Everyone Must Have Consciousness of Right” which is the translation of 8th chapter in Liang Qichao's Xinminshuo. The article has commonalities with Daehanjaganghoe Monthly's articles which is the combination between the translation of Xinminshuo and own writing in Daehanjaganghoe Monthly by Jang Jiyeon, the chief editor of Joyangbo, Through reviewing the localization and adaptation of the article, I reconstitute how Xinminshuo's individualism, originated from Jhering's The Struggle for Law, was accommodated by Korean enlightenment writers. Jhering's idea, the struggling individual for one's legal rights with self awareness for individualism, transformed to consciousness of right mainly towards national rights in 8th chapter of Xinminshuo. And Joyangbo adapts 8th chapter to nationalistic article for Korean readers, “Everyone Must Have Consciousness of Right”. The procedure of adapting and localizing displays how Korean grasped western ideas. Meanwhile, by comparison Joyangbo's translational process of Xinminshuo has more close to Hangeul syntax than that of Daehanjaganghoe Monthly. The translation of Xinminshuo is the one of influential factors for Korean Empire's literati such as Jang Jiyeon for the transition of identity toward the mass-media writer.
