이 글은 후손가에 소장되어 있던 『탐라수필(耽羅隨筆)』이라는 자료를 발굴하여 그 면모와 의의를 개설한 논문이다. 이를 위해 함께 입수한 그의 문집과 세보(世譜) 및 고문서들을 폭넓게 검토하여 저자 이인관(李仁觀)의 가계와 생애, 사회적 위치 등을 구명하였다. 또 책이 제작되는 과정을 재구하여 전반부의 내용이 『탐라수필』의 본편이고, 그 뒤로는 수차에 걸쳐 문건이 추가된 보유편의 성격을 갖고 있음을 확인하였다. 이를 토대로 수록 작품을 개관하며 『탐라수필』의 문학적 성취를 살펴보았다. 이 논의를 통해 얻은 수확은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 『탐라수필』은 19세기 중반 제주를 배경으로 한 새로운 문학 자료로서 수록 작품의 내용이 다채롭고 문예적 수준이 높다. 둘째, 19세기 경북 권역 문인이 형성하는 인적 관계망의 중요한 결절점이자 역량 있는 작가로서 이인관을 발견하였다. 셋째, 『탐라수필』은 중요한 지적 음영들을 해소해준다는 점에서 자료적 가치가 상당하다. 『탐라록』과 이원조의 제주 시절을 보다 정확하게 이해하는 데 긴요한 단서를 제공해주거니와, 소위 고문상서(古文尙書) 위작 논쟁과 관련하여 그간 확인되지 않았던 김정희의 중요한 서간문이 전재되어 있기도 한 것이다. 이상의 성과가 이인관과 『탐라수필』에 대한 본격적인 연구의 초석이 되길 기대하며, 아울러 본지 자료란에 『탐라수필』의 전문을 공개한다.
This paper unveils a book titled Tamnasupil, produced in the mid-19th century, and introduces its contents. This book, owned by the author's descendants, constitutes a new literary material that has not yet been reported to the academic world, and nothing is known about its author. Therefore, initially, the life and activities of the author, Lee In-gwan, were investigated through a detailed review of various old books and documents obtained alongside this book. Subsequently, by reconstructing the production process of this book, it was confirmed that it consists of a main volume and appendices. Based on this, the included works were overviewed, and the literary achievements of Tamnasupil were examined. The results obtained through this study are as follows. First, Tamnasupil is a new literary material left by an individual who visited Jeju in the mid-19th century, and the contents of the included works are diverse, demonstrating a high literary level. Second, we discovered Lee In-gwan, a talented writer who was active in the Gyeongsangbuk-do region in the 19th century. Notably, he is recognized as a crucial figure standing at one nodal point within the interpersonal network of literary figures at that time. Third, Tamnasupil is a valuable resource that provides previously unknown information regarding Jeju at the time. Through this book, a more accurate understanding of Tamnarok and Lee Won-jo's activities during his time in Jeju can be achieved. Additionally, Kim Jeong-hee's important essay, anticipated but unconfirmed until now, is transcribed in this book. Hopefully, this article will pave the way for the next in-depth study of Lee In-gwan and Tamnasupil. And, the full text of Tamnasupil is published together in this issue of this journal.
