이 글은 혐오, 비인간화, 악마화의 차이점을 규명하는데 목적이 있다. 기본적으로 혐오는 감정이다. 이에 비해 비인간화는 다른 사람을 인식하는 방식이나 태도이다. 따라서 비인간화는 혐오의 일종이 아니며, 혐오와는 별개의감정도 아니다. 비인간화는 혐오감정을 극단적으로 확대시키는 요인으로서혐오와 관련된다. 악마화도 마찬가지이지만, 비인간화와 두 가지 정도의 차별성을 지닌다. 첫째, 악마화는 비인간화의 일종이지만, 동물적 비인간화보다극단적인 비인간화이다. 이를 악마화적 비인간화라 부를 수 있다. 둘째, 비인간화가 상대를 도덕의 범주에서 제외시킨다면, 악마화는 도덕의 범주 안에서악의 극단 쪽에 상대를 놓는다. 이를 제외하면 폭력을 통해 상대방의 절멸을도모한다는 점에서 둘 다 목표는 같다. 동물적 비인간화와 우리사회에서의‘OO충’이란 표현, 악마화적 비인간화와 우리사회에서의 악마화는 비슷한 것같지만 차이가 있다. 우리사회에서의 ‘충’과 ‘악마’란 표현은 상대방의 절멸을 꿈꾸지 않는다. 이러한 수준의 비인간화와 악마화를 이 글에서는 ‘비인간화적 표현’, ‘악마화적 표현’이라고 명하였다. 그러나 우리사회에도 악마화적비인간화 현상이 없지는 않은데, 강력범죄에 대한 기사와 댓글들이 전형적인사례에 해당한다. 우리가 비인간화와 악마화에 관심을 가져야하는 이유이다. 비인간화와 악마화는 누군가의 문제가 아니라 모두의 문제이다.
This article aims to clarify the differences between hate, dehumanization, and demonization. Basically, hate is an emotion. Dehumanization, on the other hand, is an attitude or a way of perceiving another person. Therefore, dehumanization is not a type of hate, nor is it a separate emotion from hate. Dehumanization is an extreme amplification of disgust and is related to disgust in this respect. The same is true for demonization, but it differs from dehumanization in two ways. First, demonization is a form of dehumanization, but it is a more extreme form of dehumanization than animal dehumanization. We can call it demonizing dehumanization. Second, whereas dehumanization excludes the other from the category of morality, demonization places the other on the extreme side of evil within the category of morality. Other than that, the goal is the same: to exterminate the other through violence. Dehumanization of animals and the expression “OO worms” in our society, demonizing dehumanization and demonization in our society may seem similar, but there are differences. In our society, the terms “worms” and “devil” do not envision the other‘s destruction. This level of dehumanization and demonization is referred to in this article as “dehumanizing expressions” and “demonizing expressions”. However, demonization and dehumanization are not new to our society. Comments on articles about violent crime are a classic example. This is why we should care about dehumanization and demonization. Dehumanization and demonization is no one’s problem, it’s everyone’s problem.
