본고는 남창(南滄) 손진태(孫晋泰, 1900~?)에 중점을 두고 『진단학보(震檀學報)』에서 확인되는 그의 학문적 역할과 연구사적 의미에 대해 고찰한 글이다. 『진단학보』에 수록된 총 5편의 연구 성과물은 일본 내지의 학문 경로를 잇는 것인 동시에 이후 그의 연구가 어떠한 방향으로 진행될지를 미리 보여준다. 그런 점에서 진단학회에서의 손진태의 역할을 고찰하는 본고의 목적은 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 손진태는 와세다 고등학원 시절부터 연을 맺었던 인류학자 니시무라 신지의 문하에서 자연스럽게 문학에서 민속학으로 관심을 옮기게 된다. 니시무라와의 만남, 그리고 그의 강의가 민속학자로의 길을 걷게 한 결정적 계기가 된 셈이다. 또한, 손진태 민속학의 근간에는 비교적 관점이 관통하고 있다. 수학기의 여러 성과물에서 확인되듯 그의 연구는 동북아시아 민속 비교라는 방법론으로 그 편폭을 더욱 확장하고 있었던 것이다. 그런 까닭에 『진단학보』에서 손진태가 담당한 민속학의 세부 영역은 바로 해외의 그것이었다. 문헌 사료와 채집한 현지 자료를 이어 붙이고 타민족과의 비교를 통해 파악되는 보편성, 나아가 그 속에서 발견되는 조선 고유의 특성을 찾는 것이 손진태가 보여준 논의의 정수였다. 비교민속학을 통한 조선 연구란 그의 연구 방향은 진단학회의 창립 목적인 ‘조선 및 인근 문화의 연구’에도 부응하는 것이었다. 이에 그가 보여준 민속학의 윤곽은 『진단학보』의 학술 외연을 넓히는 데도 크게 기여했다고 할 수 있다.

This paper focuses on Nam-chang(南滄) Son Jin-tae(孫晋泰, 1900~?) and examines his academic role and research implications identified in the Journal of 『Chin-Tan Hakpo(震檀學報)』. A total of five research results included in the 『Chin-Tan Hakpo』 connect academic paths in Japan and show in advance the direction in which his research will proceed in the future. In this regard, this paper, which examines Son Jin-tae's role in the Chin-Tan society, has an important meaning. Son Jin-tae naturally shifts his interest from literature to folklore under the guidance of anthropologist Nishimura Shinji(西村眞次, 1879~1943), who has been associated with Waseda High School since his days. His meeting with Nishimura and his lectures served as a decisive opportunity for him to walk the path of a folklorist. In addition, there is a comparative study based on Son Jin-tae's folklore. As can be seen from various achievements, his research was further broadening its scope to the methodology of comparison in Northeast Asia. For this reason, the detailed area of folklore that Son Jin-tae charge in the 『Chin-Tan Hakpo』 was that of overseas. The essence of Son Jin-tae's discussion was to connect literature and collected local data and find the universality identified through comparison with other ethnic groups or the unique characteristics of Joseon founded in them. The study of Joseon through comparative folk studies was to respond to the founding purpose of the Chin-Tan Society, 'the study of Joseon and neighboring cultures'. Therefore, it can be said that the outline of folklore he showed greatly contributed to expanding the academic extension of the 『Chin-Tan Hakpo』.
