본 연구는 한국에서 수학 중인 일본인 유학생의 정체성 형성과 변화를 살펴보는 데에 목적을 둔다. 여기서 일본인 유학생이라 함은, 일본을 모국으로 하며 일본어를 모국어로 하는 일본인을 말하며 재일교포 및 디아스포라는 연구 대상에서 제외한다. 일본인 유학생은 한국에서 거주하며 다양한 한일 관계를 맞닥뜨려야 하는데, 이때 한일 관계가 이들이 한국에서 형성하는 정체성에 어떠한 영향을 주는지 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 이를 위해 유학생의 내러티브를 수집하여 자아 정체성과 자기 정체성으로 분류하고 내러티브를 분석하였다. 분석 결과 한일 관계는 일본인 유학생의 정체성에 유의미한 영향을 미치며 소속감 형성 및 한국 적응, 언어 학습 등에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 한일 관계와 일본인 유학생의 정체성 형성 간 상관관계를 밝혔다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 나아가 이들이 한국에서 원만하게 적응하여 수학하기 위해서는 소속감 형성이 무엇보다 중요하며, 이를 통해 올바른 정체성이 형성될 수 있음을 확인하였다.
The purpose of this study is to examine the identity formation and change of Japanese foreign students studying in Korea. To do so, the narratives of foreign students were collected and categorized into self-identity and ego identity. The results of the analysis were used to examine how the Japan-Korea relationship affects identity formation and change. The results showed that the Japan-Korea relationship has a significant impact on Japanese foreign students' identity, which, in turn, affects their adjustment to Korea, sense of belonging, and language learning. This study is significant in that it reveals the correlation between Japan-Korea relations and Japanese foreign students' identity and concludes that the formation of a sense of belonging in Korea is an important factor for proper identity formation among Japanese foreign students.
