이 논문은 충청방언에 대한 기존의 연구 성과를 살펴보고 이를 바탕으로충청방언 연구를 보다 활성화하기 위해 나아갈 방향을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 충청방언에 속하는 충남방언과 충북방언의 연구 흐름을 나누어다루고자 하였는데, 충청방언에 대한 연구가 본격적으로 시작된 이래 그 연구 동향은 충청남도와 충청북도로 양분되었기 때문이다. 충청방언 연구의흐름을 음운, 문법, 기타 분야로 나누어 주로 시기에 따라 살펴보았는데, 음운 연구의 경우 모음에 대한 연구에 치중된 경향이 있고, 문법 연구의 경우역시 몇몇 주제에 한정된 경향이 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그렇지만 충청방언의 전반적인 면모와 하위 지역어에 대해 세밀하게 다룬 연구들과 그 밖에 다양한 주제로 충청방언을 연구한 연구 성과를 통해, 앞으로 충청방언 연구가나아갈 방향에 대해 모색하고 충청방언 연구를 보다 활성화하기 위해 해결해야 할 몇 가지 과제를 제시하였다.
This paper aims to examine the existing research achievements on the Chungcheong dialect and explore directions for further activation of research based on these findings. The research flow of Chungnam dialect and Chungbuk dialect, which are part of the Chungcheong dialect, is divided and discussed. Because the research trends on Chungcheong dialect have been bifurcated into Chungcheongnam－do and Chungcheongbuk－ do since the initiation of comprehensive research. The flow of Chungcheong dialect research is mainly examined chronologically in the areas of phonology, grammar, and other fields. In phonology, there is a tendency to focus on vowel studies, while in grammar research, there is also a tendency to be limited to certain topics. However, through studies that intricately cover various aspects of Chungcheong dialect and delve into sub －dialects, as well as other diverse topics, this paper explores the direction for future research on Chungcheong dialect. It presents some challenges that need to be addressed to further activate research on Chungcheong dialect.
