The purpose of this study is to comprehensively examine and integrate the concepts of cohesion and coherence, which have been defined in various ways in previous research, and establish their relationship. First, the concept of cohesion exhibits two facets of definition. The first emphasizes cohesion as a semantic linking relationship, while the second underscores the presence of cohesive devices in defining cohesion. Similarly, the concept of coherence can be divided into two aspects. The first aspect relates to coherence within the text, while the second aspect pertains to coherence between the text and its external context. Based on the diverse perspectives that have defined the concepts of cohesion and coherence, this study proposes the integration of cohesion and coherence with a focus on coherence.Utilizing coherence operating through various factors in a wider range of areas than cohesion allows for the observation and explanation of various issues in the text composition process from multiple perspectives.
