통신사(通信使)는 전근대 적례외교(敵禮外交)의 입장에서 상대국에 파견한 사절단이다. 역사적으로 통신사는 조선 국왕의 이름으로 일본의 무가(武家) 정권인 바쿠후(幕府)의 쇼군(將軍)에게 파견했던 공식적인 외교 사절단이다. 따라서 통신사는 ‘조선통신사’라 통용되기도 한다. 본고에서는 1607년 사행(使行) 노정(路程)과 『통문관지(通文館志)』의 사행 노정을 비교ㆍ분석하여, 1607년 사행 노정에 담긴 의미를 살펴보았다. 연구 사료는 일본과의 외교관계가 기록된 『통문관지』와 1607년 사행을 기록한 『해사록(海槎錄)』과 「해동기(海東記)」이다. 연구에서는 동시대 사행록임에도 『해사록』이나 「해동기」에 관한 개별적인 연구에 머물고 있다는 점에서 시작했다. 따라서 두 사료를 비교ㆍ분석하고, 그 결과를 『통문관지』와 비교했다. 그 결과, 당대 중심사료인 『해사록』과 「해동기」의 사료적 한계를 보완할 수 있었다. 그리고 충주에서 한성에 이르는 일부 상행 구간을 제외하고, 사행 노정은 『통문관지』의 기록과 일치한다는 점을 확인했다. 1607년 사행 경로에 담긴 의미는 크게 세 가지로 분석되었다. 첫째, 이 사행을 시작으로 통신사의 주요 목적지가 교토(京都)에서 에도(江戶)로 바뀌었다는 점이다. 이는 이 사행이 조선 후기 통신사 사행로의 정형을 제시하고 있다는 측면으로 해석할 수 있다. 둘째, 일본에서의 노정에서 부산포에서 교토(京都)에 이르는 사행로는 세토나이해(瀨戶內海)를 횡단하는 해로(海路)가 중심이었고, 교토에서 에도에 이르는 사행로는 육로(陸路)가 중심이었다는 점이다. 셋째, 국내에서의 노정에서 삼사가 영남 지방에서 분로(分路)하는 세부 과정과 이를 통해서 국내 노정이 점차 정형화하는 과정이라는 점을 확인할 수 있었다.
In this paper, the meaning of the travel route was examined by comparing and analyzing the travel route of the envoys in 『Tongmun Kwanji(通文館志)』, which recorded diplomatic relations with Japan, and the travel route of the 1607 ‘Reply and Prisoner Repatriation Envoy’. In particular, as a travel diary in 1607, the reality of the journey was comprehensively revealed by comparing and analyzing the “Haedonggi(海東記)” recorded in “Haesarok(海槎錄)”. The research results are as follows. First, starting with this diplomatic mission, the main destination of the Joseon Tongsinsa was changed from Kyoto(京都) to Edo(江戶). This can be interpreted as the aspect that this diplomatic mission was presenting a pattern in terms of the travel path of the Joseon Tongsinsa in the late Joseon Dynasty. Second, on a trip to Japan, the travel route from Busanpo(釜山浦) to Kyoto(京都) was centered on the sea route crossing Japan's Seto Inland Sea(瀨戶內海), and the route from Kyoto to Edo(江戶) was the land route. Third, on domestic travel, it was possible to confirm the detailed process of the division of the three envoys in the Yeongnam(嶺南) region, and to confirm the process of domestic travel gradually becoming standardized.
