The purpose of this study is to establish foundational data for enhancing the communication skills of Chinese learners of Korean by examining the patterns of ‘Korean Backchannel’ and ‘Chinese Backchannel’ in daily conversations. This study analyzed conversations in variety shows and examined the expressions of listeners’ responses in the dialogue. In addition, we compared them in terms of function, shape, frequency, and position, identifying both similarities and differences. Furthermore, we discussed the educational implications for improving the communication skills of Chinese learners of Korean. The results of the analysis revealed that within a similar timeframe, the frequency of using ‘Korean Backchannel’ is higher than ‘Chinese Backchannel’. Moreover, many similarities and differences were also found in the parts of word class, honorification and language form. Finally, the comparison of appearance positions showed that although the ‘Korean Backchannel’ often appeared in the middle of the dialogue, but most of the ‘Chinese Backchannel’ appeared at the end. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the development of effective teaching methods for ‘Korean Backchannel’ education for Chinese learners of Korean.
