기독교의 핵심은 절대적 타자인 하나님과 구체적인 타자인 이웃을 포괄하는 타자와의 책임적 관계 설정이며, 타자 사랑으로 귀결된다. 그러나 현실 속 기독교는 다른 타자들, 특히 민족적 타자들을 무시하거나 혹은 배제하는 일을 정당화하기도 했다. 민족적 타자에 대한 한국기독교의 차별을 논의할 때 한국기독교 안에 깊이 내재된 민족주의적인 차원이 면밀하게 고찰되어야 한다. 한국기독교 민족주의는 한국적인 특성과 기독교적인 특성이 복합되어 연결되어 있고, 그 안에 민족주의적인 특성이 분리되기 어렵게 접합되어 있다. 타자 사랑에 대한 명령이 분명함에도 불구하고 한국기독교의 민족적 타자에 대한 폭력성이 지속적으로 드러나는 이유는 다양한 타자들, 특별히 민족적 타자를 동일성의 틀 안에서 수용하려는 자세를 유지해 왔기 때문이다. 이 논문은 한국 기독교 안에 자리 잡은 민족주의적 특성을 바탕으로 교회 안 민족적 타자의 차별을 살펴본다. 한국에서 이뤄진 기독교 민족주의의 형성을 살펴보며, 한국 교회가 민족적 타자에게 가하고 있는 암시적 혹은 명시적 차별을 고찰하며, 민족적 타자들에 대한 차별을 극복하는 기독교 윤리적 방법에 대해 모색하여 배제의 배제와 타자의 윤리에 기초한 기독교의 환대 가능성을 모색한다.
Korean Christianity has contributed greatly to the formation and expansion of the Korean nationalism. Christian nationalism in Korea was formed from the early days of Protestantism. Christianity and nationalism were combined and conjugated, on the one hand, to modernize the nation and achieve independence from Japanese imperialism, and on the other, to evangelize and purify Korean people. Korean Christianity with its deep connection to nationalism, which had experienced liberation and modernization through ‘exclusion of exclusion,’ continues nationalistic discrimination, alienating and excluding ethnic others in the reality of Korea, which is transforming into a multicultural and multiracial society. Ethnic others are not recognized as equals by the Korean church through overt and covert discrimination, and are defined as passive and self-serving beings. In order to overcome discriminatory attitudes toward ethnic others, the Korean church should abandon both its attitude of using Christianity as a tool of expanding Korean nationality on the one hand and its attitude of trying to embody the purity of the nation or to pursue trans-national religion. Korean Christianity should welcome ethnic others with an attitude of self-emptiness. It will be an important way to solve the problems faced by the Korean church in a multicultural society by providing to ethnic others autonomy and safety which Western Christianity had provided to Koreans in the late Joseon Dynasty.
