평양은 전통적으로 풍수학적으로 ‘행주형’에 해당하며 평양에서 전하는 속설도 그런 맥락 속에서 이해되어 왔다. 곧 평양에서 우물을 파지 않는 금기, 평양의 연광정 아래에 닻을 내려 평양이 떠내려가지 않게 한다는 속설은 평양이 ‘행주형’이기 때문에 만들어졌다는 것이다. 여기에 평양 서북쪽에 두 개의 돌기둥을 세웠는데 이것도 평양이 떠내려가지 않도록 한 것이라는 내용도 덧붙일 수 있다. 풍수학적인 논의는 해당 지역의 속설의 논리를 잘 설명해주고 있지만, 이런 논리로 개별 지역의 특수한 상황을 모두 다 잘 이해할 수 있는 것은 아니다. 이 글에서는 평양 지역을 중심으로 읍지 및 관련 기록을 통해 이 문제를 살펴보았다. 16세기 읍지 내용만 봐도 평양의 우물은 ‘행주형’으로 이해되지 않았다. 다만 어느 시점에 평양의 외성은 대동강과 수원이 통해서 맛이 있으나 내성의 우물물은 점차 맛이 없었거나 식수에 적당하지 않아서 대동강이나 보통강의 강물을 길어 식수로 삼았는데, 이것이 ‘행주형’ 형국의 금기에 부합하여 적극적으로 재해석되었던 것이다. 그런데 평양은 삼면을 강으로 둘렀기 때문에 행주형으로 이해되었지만 시간이 갈수록 평양부성이라는 좁은 영역으로 ‘행주형’ 지역이 축소되었고 점차 이것을 설명하는 논리도 등장했다. 같은 맥락에서 18세기 초에 나온 평양 읍지에서 평양을 ‘행주형’을 설명한 근거는 대동강과 대동강 하류 요포에서 쇠로 만든 닻을 발견했다는 점이었으나 20세기에는 연광정 앞이라는 공간이 더 중요하게 해석되었다. 또 평양의 서북쪽에 세운 두 개의 돌기둥도 배가 순항하게 돕는 ‘노’의 역할에서 평양이 강물에 떠내려가지 않도록 붙잡아 두는 ‘배말뚝’으로 인식하는 변화가 나타나고 있다. 이런 변화들은 이 도시에서 오히려 현실적으로 절실했던 것은 각종 재난의 방비와 억제였기 때문이라고 할 수 있다. ‘행주형’이라는 풍수담론은 예측할 수 없는 재해에 대해 금기와 비보 조치라는 안정감 있는 논리를 제시해서 널리 받아들여질 수 있었다.
There have been several myths since ancient times that the topography of Pyongyang is in a haengju(行舟: drifing boat) -type in terms of feng shui(風水: geomancy). Records from the late Joseon era claimed that Pyongyang is shaped like a drifting boat(行舟), and therefore wells are not dug and rivers are used for drinking water or that anchors were lowered under Yeonkwangjeong Pavilion and stone pillars were built in the northwestern field of Pyongyang to prevent Pyongyang from drifting away. When this myth is discussed, it was generally characterized as originating "from ancient times" and presumed that residents have shared such beliefs since a long time ago, but in reality, the history of this specific interpretation is not very long. Even the town chronicles of Pyongyang published in 1590 indicate that there were quite a lot of wells in Pyongyang at that time. Then, when did Pyongyang’s 'Haengju-type' discourse emerge? In addition, as this discourse became mainstream, how did aspects of Pyongyang begin to be interpreted differently than before and what measures were taken to suit the "Haengju-type" situation? Based on Pyongyang's town chronicles and related data, this article examined the changes that appeared in Pyongyang after the "Haengju-type" discourse was visualized and discusses areas that can be newly understood through the Haengju-type discourse.
