본 논문에서는 고려 사절의 대거란 사행 여정을 사행 장소와 경로를 중심으로 검토하였다. 거란은 건국 후에도 계절에 따라 이동하며 통치하는 捺鉢을 행했기 때문에 황제의 소재지는 계절마다 변화가 있었다. 이에 황제를 알현해야 하는 고려 사절의 사행지는 五京을 비롯해 廣平淀과 慶州, 永安山 등으로 일정하지 않았다. 이중 중경에서 동날발이 자주 행해졌던 성종 재위 동안 고려에서 연말에 파견된 다양한 명목의 사절이 中京으로 향했고, 南京의 경우 사절이 도착한 시기는 다양하였다. 東京에서는 요서지역을 지나 중경에 도착하였고, 남경까지는 발해만을 따라가는 해안 노선과 중경을 거치는 경로가 있었음을 확인하였다. 이중 해안 노선을 이용하면 남경까지 조금 더 빠르게 이동할 수 있었다. 고려 사절의 사행지는 날발이 주로 행해지는 上京道 지역이었던 사례가 많았다. 永州 인근의 광평정은 주요 동날발 장소였으므로 고려가 연말에 보내는 여러 명목의 사절은 이곳을 자주 방문하였고 황제나 태후의 국상 때 조문 사절은 경주로 향하였다. 신년이나 절일 하례 등의 사절은 대체로 연말에 파견되었으므로 동날발지에 갔으나 비정기적으로 보내진 사절의 사행 장소는 시기에 따라 다양하였다. 이들 지역까지는 중경을 지나거나 동북쪽으로 올라가 강을 따라가는 경로와 더불어 덜 우회하는 노선이 있었을 것으로 추정하였다. 그리고 사행에는 2~3개월이 소요되었다. 이처럼 다양한 지역으로의 사행은 고려가 거란에 대한 이해를 높이며 양국 간 안정적인 관계 유지에 중요한 역할을 했다는 점에서 의미가 있다.
This study examines the Itinerary of Goryeo Embassy to Khitan, focusing on the destination and travel route. As Khitan maintained a nomadic lifestyle, emperor traveled seasonally conducing Nabo. Due to this government system, Goryeo envoys to Khitan did not always visit to one set destination. It is found that Goryeo envoys visited various places such as Five Capitals (五京), Guangping Lake (廣平淀), Qingzhou (慶州), and Mt. Yongan (永安山), etc. in their diplomatic trips to Khitan. First, Goryeo envoys with various purposes visited the Central Capital often in winter as Emperor Shenzong held winter nabo there during his reign. On the other hand, Goryeo envoys went to the Southern Capital in various seasons. From the Eastern Capital, there was a travel route to the Central Capital passing through the Liaoxi area. From the Eastern Capital to the Southern Capital, there was one route along the Bohai bay and another path going through the Central Capital. Of the two, the coastal route was the faster than the inland route. Second, Goryeo envoys visited places in the Supreme Circuit more frequently. As winter nabo was mainly conducted in Guangping Lake near Yongzhou (永州), diverse regular and special envoys headed there. When there was a state funeral of emperor or empress dowager, Goryeo envoys went to Qingzhou to express condolence. In addition, the destination of Goryeo envoys arrival was related to the specific time as the emperor moved every season for nabo. While regular envoys for celebrating New Year and Brithday of an emperor or empress dowager were sent at the end of year, special envoys were dispatched to various destinations as the occasion demands. Regarding the travel route, it is assumed that there is one route passing through the Central Capital and another one to the north and along the rivers. However, these presumed routes have limitation as they detoured to the Supreme Circuit. Because there were frequent exchange of envoys between the two, it is presumed that there was a direct route from the Eastern Capital. For the travel of diplomatic trips, it generally took about two to three months. These diplomatic trips to the various destinations was meaningful in that they helped the Goryeo people to increase understanding of the Khitan state and people, which provided the foundation of stable relations between the two states.
