The objective of this study was to examine the impact of second language proficiency on morphological awareness. Primary linguistic comparisons revealed significant differences in morphological awareness between two separate languages, Korean and English. Two distinct adult L2 English learning groups (i.e., beginning-level learner group and intermediate-level learner group) were used to empirically test these beliefs. It was specifically predicted that intermediate-level learners learning English would be less sensitive to intraword structural salience, and more adept at combining contextual and morphological information. The empirical findings demonstrated that the intraword structural sensitivity did not differ significantly between the two experimental groups. Furthermore, the intermediate- level learner group showed a better degree of efficiency in mixing contextual and morphological information during sentence processing the beginning-level learner group. Results indicate that L2 proficiency has a noticeable and consistent impact on the growth of L2 morphological awareness.
