연구는 1970년대 하와이에서 펼친 성금연과 지영희의 음악 활동을 조명하였다. 성금연과 지영희는 한국 민속악계에 큰 족적을 남긴 예술가 부부로, 1974년 하와이로 이주했다. 그들의 하와이 이민은 하와이 내 한국 전통 공연을 다양화하는 계기를 제공하였다. 두 명인은 한국을 대표하는 다채로운 공연을 기획하여 다양한 민족과 인종 배경을 지닌 지역 관객들에게 소개하였다. 이들이 선 무대는 한국음악과 무용의 다양한 장르를 소개하기 위한 것에서부터, 특정 장르의 한국 민속악을 집중적으로 소개하는 프로그램, 나아가 다른 민족 예술인들의 공연에 이어 한국을 대표하는 공연을 하나 혹은 둘 선보이는 형태에 이르기까지 다양했다. 이들이 참여한 공연의 레퍼토리도 다양했는데 구체적으로 정악, 가야금 병창, 산조, 민요, 판소리, 단가, 농악, 굿 등을 아우르고 있었다. 또한 1950년에 이주하여 한라함무용연구소를 설립한 한라함이 한국 전통 궁중무용과 민속무용에 착안하여 창작한 <무당춤>, <노인춤>, <오고무> 등도 선보여졌는데 성금연과 지영희는 이 춤 공연에 새롭게 작곡한 음악 반주를 담당했다. 무엇보다 성금연과 지영희 존재는 이미 이주했거나 방문한 국악계 사람들, 부부의 일가족, 다인종‧다민족으로 이루어진 하와이대학 혹은 한라함무용연구소 소속 지역민이 활발한 한국 전통공연 활동을 전개하는 데에 크게 이바지하였다.
This study illuminated the performance activities of Seong Geum-yeon and Ji Yeong-hui, who unfolded their talents in Hawai‘i in the 1970s. Seong and Ji were a prominent artistic couple in the field of Korean traditional music, and they immigrated to Hawai‘i in 1974. Their immigration to Hawai‘i provided an opportunity to diversify traditional Korean performances within Hawai‘i. Seong and Ji planned and presented a diverse range of performances representing Korea to local audiences with various ethnic and racial backgrounds. The two individuals showed off their musical talents at a variety of events, including those for presenting different genres of Korean music and dance; introducing different Korean performances of a specific genre; and showing one or two Korean performances along with other ethnic groups’. Their repertoires included jeongak, gayageum byeongchang, sanjo, minyo, pansori, danga, nongak, and gut. Also included were <Shaman Dance (Mudangchum)>, <Old Man’s Dance (Noinchum)>, <Five-Drum Dance (Ogomu)>, all of which were what Halla Huhm, who founded the Halla Huhm Dance Studio in 1950, adapted from traditional Korean court and folk dances. Seong and Ji played newly-created music to accompany these dance performances. Above all, the presence of Seong and Ji significantly contributed to the vibrant engagement in traditional Korean performing arts among people within the Korean music community, who have either immigrated or visited, the couple's family members, and multi-ethnic, multi-racial individuals associated with the University of Hawai‘i or the Halla Huhm Dance Studio.
