This study examined the process of change in the relationship between the Chosun and the Qing Dynasty through the analysis of the resolution process of the Water Buffalo Horn Tribute in the Early Qing Dynasty, which was one of the important diplomatic disputes between Chosun and Qing dynasty. Water Buffalo Horn is one of the important military items for making bows with the horns of buffalo. Incident of Water Buffalo Horn Tribute was included in the Chosun’s tribute item during the 1637 Treaty of Jeongchuk after the end of the event was later excluded from the tribute item in 1654. Until now, research on this case has been limited in grasping the whole story because it has no choice but to rely on 「禮部知會免進牛角代貢紙張咨」 and 「回咨」 in 『同文彙考』, 『通文館志』 in the historical records of the Chosun Joseon Dynasty. However, in the mid-2010s, the researcher discovered that three archives related to this incident were included among the newly released data by The First Historical Archives of China, and based on this, the discussion and resolution process within the Qing dynasty were summarized in detail. It was then revealed that the incident was deeply related to the first the Conquest to Russia, and this led to changes in relations between Chosun and Qing, including the resolution of the Incident of the declaration of crown prince.
