본 연구는 한국어 신어 연구의 현황을 검토하고 생성형 AI를 활용한 신어 연구의 가능성을 제시하는 데에 목적이 있다. 한국어 신어 연구는 국립국어원의 신어 연구 사업에 따라서 활성화되기 시작하였다. 이에 국립국어원의 연도별 신어 연구 사업을 검토하고 이에 따른 신어 연구에 대한 추이를 살펴보았다. 나아가 국립국어원의 신어 연구 사업이신어 조사에 대한 비용을 감소시키고 신어의 정의에 대한 암묵적 합의를 이끌어 냈다는점에서 의의가 있다는 점을 밝혔다. 국립국어원의 신어 연구 사업이 종료된 이후 다양한 양상으로 신어에 대한 연구가 진행되고 있는 상황에서 최근 빠르게 도입되고 있는 생성형 AI에 주목하였다. 본 논의에서는생성형 AI를 활용하여 신어 자료를 추출하였고 직접적으로 생성형 AI를 통해 신어를 생성하기도 하였다. 생성형 AI를 활용한 신어 생성은 크게 순화어 생성하기와 제시된 상황에 대응하는 적절한 단어 만들기로 진행하였다. 그 결과 생성형 AI는 프롬프트 입력에 따라 다양한 양상으로 새로운 단어를 생성하는 것을 확인하였다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 신어 연구의 외연이 확장되고 생성형 AI를 통한 신어 연구가 더욱 활발히 진행되기를 기대한다.
The purpose of this study is to review the current state of Korean neologism research and to suggest the possibility of neologism research using generative AI. Korean neologism research began to be activated by the Korean National Institute of the Korean Language’s neologism research project. Therefore, we reviewed the Korean National Institute of the Korean Language’s neologism research project by year and examined the trend of neologism research. Furthermore, it was revealed that the Korean National Institute of the Korean Language’s neologism research project is signifi cant in that it has reduced the cost of neologism research and led to an implicit consensus on the defi nition of neologisms. In the context of the ongoing research on neologisms in various ways after the Korean National Institute of the Korean Language’s neologism research project was discontinued, we focused on generative AI, which has been rapidly introduced recently. In this discussion, we extracted neologism data using generative AI and generated neologisms directly through generative AI. The generation of neologisms using generative AI was carried out in two main ways: generating euphemisms and creating appropriate words for the given situation. As a result, it was confi rmed that generative AI can generate new words in various ways depending on the prompt input. Based on this discussion, we expect that the scope of neologism research will be expanded and that neologism research through generative AI will be more active.
