이 글은 이항의 철학사상과 조식의 관계를 다룬 글이다. 이항과 조식은 동시대 인물이지만, 행동 패턴이 조금 달랐다. 이항이 리기심성론을 주장하는 논변에 대해서 조식은 이름을 도둑질한 것이라고 비판한다. 다시 말해 논변보다는 실제 수양공부에 치중하라는 권고이다. 이항의 리기심성론에 대하여 이황이 주자학의 정통을 벗어났다고 평가하였지만 그렇다고 그의 학술사상이 주자학적 사고를 벗어난 것은 아니다. 다른 한편으로 이항은 허엽, 이구, 노수신 등의 심학을 비판하였다. 이항의 철학은 두 학파 사이에서 절충점 또는 변별점을 추구하였기 때문에 독립적인 학술체계를 세우기가 매우 어려웠다. 다시 말해 이항은 이황의 주자학과 서경덕의 심학 사이에서 두 학파의 논리적 단점을 지적하고 비판하였다. 이항의 철학은 정통 주자학으로부터 후자 그룹에 속한다고 비난받았다. 더구나 이항이 리기일물론이나 심성일물론을 논리적으로 끝까지 추구하여 수양공부론을 완성하지 못한 점에서 심학 관점에서 비판받을 수 있다. 이항의 학술적 절충 또는 쌍방 비난은 이후에 독립된 학파를 만들지 못하는 이유가 되었다. 반면에 조식은 주자학의 형이상학에 관한 논변이 초래하는 위험을 눈여겨보고 있었고, 이항이나 이황도 이러한 한계를 벗어나지 못하고 있었다. 조식은 이론이 섬세해질수록 번쇄해져서 행동으로 나아가지 못한다고 보는 것이다.

This article deals with the relationship between the philosophical thought of Lee Hang and it's critic by Cho Sik. Although Lee Hang and Cho Sik were contemporaries, their behavior patterns were slightly different. Regarding Lee's argument for claiming Li qi xin xing, Cho criticizes him for stealing confucian value. In other words, it is a recommendation to focus on actual training rather than argumentation. Although Lee's theory of Li qi xin xing was evaluated as deviating from the orthodox philosophical theory of Zhu Xi, this does not mean that his academic ideology deviated from the philosophical thought of Zhu Xi. On the other hand, Lee Hang criticized the school of mind, He Yeop, Lee gu, and Ro Shu sin. It was very difficult to establish an independent academic system because Lee's philosophy pursued a compromise or a point of distinction between the two schools. In other words, Lee pointed out and criticized the logical shortcomings of the two schools between Lee Hwang's Confucianism and Se Gyeong Duk's mind school. Li Hang's philosophy was criticized as belonging to the latter group by the orthodox Zhu Xi. Moreover, it can be criticized from a psychological point of view for the fact that Lee Hang did not complete the study of discipline by logically pursuing one thing of li-qi and one thing of xin and xing. Lee's academic compromise or criticism from both sides became the reason for not being able to create an independent school later. On the other hand, Cho Sik was paying attention to the danger posed by the argument about metaphysics of Zhu Xi, and neither Lee Hang nor Lee Hwang could escape this limit. Cho Sik is the belief that the more delicate the theory, the more it shatters and does not lead to action.
