드라마 <나의 아저씨> 서사에 나타난 연민의 감정을 마사 누스바움의 연민 이론으로 분석했다. 이를 위해 주인공 박동훈과 이지안이 처한 고통의현실과 원인을 파악하고, 이들이 수치심과 자기혐오를 넘어 자기연민에 도달하는 과정, 이웃을 통한 연민 감정의 확장과 실천의 과정을 살펴보았다. 박동훈은 인간의 본질적인 취약성을 이해하는 ‘분별 있는 관찰자’로서 이지안에게 공감하고, 이지안의 고통의 ‘심각성과 부당함’을 판단해 연민의 감정을 느낀다. 그리고 그녀의 ‘핵심역량’의 부재를 파악해 ‘역량접근법’으로 연민의 윤리를 보여준다. ‘상호의존성과 평등성’의 가치에 기반한 ‘행복주의적판단’으로 연민을 실천에 옮기는 것이다. 이지안 또한 관찰자로서 박동훈의인간적 취약성과 고통에 대해 심각성과 부당함을 판단하고, 연민의 감정으로 박동훈을 위기에서 구한다. 이들은 서로에게 공감하며 위안을 얻고, 수치심과 자기혐오에서 벗어나 자기연민에 도달한다. 이들의 연민은 후계동 선후배 이웃들을 통해 확장된 모습으로 나타난다. 연민은 <나의 아저씨> 서사의 핵심적 감정으로 작용하며, 인간존재의 불완전성과 유한성을 극복하고자 한 이 작품의 궁극적 지향점이라 할 수 있다. <나의 아저씨>는 연민의서사를 상상력으로 탁월하게 구현한 결과, 한국은 물론 뒤늦게 이를 접한글로벌 시청자에게까지 커다란 호응과 지지를 얻었다고 할 수 있다.
The emotion of “compassion” in the narrative of the TV series My Misterwas analyzed with Martha ussbaum's theory of compassion. To this end, thereality and cause of the suffering of the main characters Park Dong-hun andLee Ji-an were identified, the process of reaching self-compassion beyond shameand self-hatred, and the process of expanding and practice of compassionthrough neighbors were examined. Park Dong-hoon sympathizes with Ji-an as a ‘judicious spectator’ whounderstands the essential vulnerability of humans, and feels compassion by‘judgement of seriousness’ and ‘judgment of nondesert’ of Ji-an's pain. Andby grasping the absence of her ‘core capabilities’, she practices the ethics of compassion through the ‘capabilities approach’. This is the result of puttingcompassion into practice with a ‘eudaimonistic judgment’ based on the valuesof ‘interdependence and equality’. Lee Ji-an, as a spectator, judge the seriousnessand nondesert of Dong-hun's human vulnerability and suffering, and savesDong-hoon from danger with a feeling of compassion. They sympathize witheach other, find comfort, and reach self-compassion, escaping from shameand self-hatred. Their compassion appears in an expanded form through theirsenior and junior neighbors in Hugye-dong. Compassion acts as a key emotion in the narrative of My Mister, and canbe said to be the ultimate goal of this work to overcome the imperfectionand finitude of human existence. As a result of excellently embodying thenarrative of compassion with imagination, My Mister received great responseand support from not only Korea but also global audiences who came acrossit belatedly.
